Damaged USB-C port

I used a too strong power supply on vacation and the device stopped working completely after a few days. The device smelled a bit burned, so I opened it up. I couldn't find any obvious damage but, after reaching the USB-C port, I did see a small burned area in the base, right under the USB-C port.

The USB-C port itself looks good.

What is the best way to identify the source of the problem? Can I test the USB-C port and is the part easily replacable?

If the port was easy to access and remove, then yes, there are most likely replacements for it.
Use a multimeter, check if all points on the USB-C port do have power, otherwise, replace.
If you don't want to immediately replace the port, then check the power plug connecting with a multimeter to check and see if anything fishy is going on, or check for any pieces of metal touching parts that it shouldn't.
