Background and Identification
The NeatDesk is a desktop document scanner sold by Neat since 2006 (as shown on Neat’s official history page). Although Neat left the hardware business in 2016 to focus on it’s cloud document services, many of these machines are still in use; they remain a useful scanning tool and can last for years with proper care. The NeatDesk manual (archived here on ManualsLib) gives instructions for cleaning the device. Some of the guides on this page can help you repair the electronics or other components of the scanner.
If you have this scanner but don’t want to use Neat software, you can also use it as an ordinary scanner. See this Neat support article for more information.
The NeatDesk has a plain white and black design with curved plastic sides and an area on the top where you feed paper into the machine. Using it’s automatic document feeder (ADF) feature, the NeatDesk is capable of ingesting a maximum of 50 pages at once; it separates each page and scans the front and back of each sheet while the paper slides down through the device. Three channels in the feeder area are marked for documents of different sizes: plain paper, receipts, and business cards. The scanning elements inside the device can capture images of your documents at a maximum resolution of 600 dots per inch (dpi). The largest paper you can put into the machine is A4 paper (8.5 inches by 11.7 inches). US Letter paper will also work because it is smaller than A4 paper.
To connect the scanner to your computer, use a USB cable. The NeatDesk has a port for a USB-B 2.0 connector specifically (note that a cable with a USB-B 3.0 connector is physically larger and won’t work with the scanner). The device also requires power from an AC power adapter. If you’re looking online for a replacement adapter, look for one rated for 24 volts and at least .75 amps (see the specifications below for more details).
You can identify the NeatDesk by looking on the bottom side to find the model number. The older version of the device has the number “ADF-070108” while the updated version is labelled as the “ND-1000.”
