This is the battery. For guides that are for other parts, the battery is removed for the reason of it being a pain to connect or disconnect while screwed in.

Remove four J1 Philips screws.

Remove one J1 philips screw.

Lift the battery slightly using your plastic opening tool.

Pull the battery towards you until the wire is accessible.

gently tug and wiggle on the wire until it pops out.

Remove the battery.

This is the SSD

remove the warranty sticker

Remove 1 J1 Screw holding the SSDRemove the screw holding the SSD.

Slightly lift the rear of the SSD

Gently pull it out.
Don't you just slide the bottom cover forward? I don't think there is any reason to pry it up.

Your lucky to have a M.2 ssd. Also take those labels off if your going to have it serviced they may think you have opened it.

I was able to take off the battery. But I stripped the screw for the ssd. It would not come out. I used what I thought was the correct screwdriver. Can any help me?

Stripping the screw usually only happens if a] you’re using a screwdriver that’s the wrong size, or b] you aren’t applying sufficient pressure. You may be able to remove the screw by using some fine/needlenose pliers, but I’d urge caution in doing so, and you might want to take this somewhere to have it done professionally if you’re at all uncomfortable doing so safely. Once you’ve loosened it, remove it by hand if possible.
Also, I’d recommend you replace the screw while you have the case apart. It is most likely a metric, m2 (as in, m1, m2, m3, etc. unrelated to the M.2 SSD form factor) x 3mm long, though the length may vary by about 0.5mm. You can sometimes find these at local hardware stores like Ace or a locally-owned non-Ace store. Larger hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowes (in the US) are less likely to carry metric screws that small.
Steps 4-5 appear to be unnecessary for this upgrade unless you’re disconnecting the battery for safety reasons. Is that why they’re present?

I just started doing some research to replace my drive. What do I need to look for to make sure the replacement drive is compatible?
Crucial is a good resource to start with. https://www.crucial.com/ Their website has feature similar to car parts shops. You need to know the exact model of your device. That information is usually on the underside of a laptop or the back of your PC tower. Type that into their search for the SSD or hard drive and it will let you know which drive is 100% guaranteed compatible with your device.
Otherwise, it may take a little digging for an older device, but Lenovo has all their product manuals on line. Other manufacturers usually do as well. Those will often say what kind of drive your device has. It's a little less reliable for exactness however, because many of the manuals cover a number of the models variants as well. But it is likey to point you in the right direction as it did for me.
The reason the screw is getting stripped is because it's a JIS #1 screw. JIS screws are not Phillips head screws, they are a Japanese variant and the screw drivers are not interchangeable with Phillips head screwdrivers. Just be careful to make sure you are using a JIS #1 screwdriver or the screw will strip…Just learned this the hard way. I'm still hoping I can get it out…here I come Lowes.
And don't worry Aidan you're guide is not the reason I made this mistake. Almost no other guides mention this. I've come across 60+ year olds that just realized the difference while on my search to figure this out. In fact, the error was what may have save my butt (knowing it was a problem made me be as careful as I could with what I had).
