Remove two Torx T8 security screws from top cover.
-
Remove warranty sticker (if it's still there) and remove black screw for the top case using Torx T8 security screw.
-
-
-
Pull up on front right edge of top cover.
-
After right front is loose pull up on left front.
-
Pull top cover back and set aside.
-
-
-
Using a Phillips PH1, remove two APU/heat sink clamp screws.
This will not work on older systems it doesn’t even look the same
-
-
-
-
Start by installing 2 washers under each screw.
-
Install the clamp and screws and tighten screws.
What size washers
I think any size will work as long as tou can screw the plate back down, and they don't extend past the cover for your PS4
what size did you use
What if you are missing the APU/Heat Sink Clamp
What are washers
Washers are flat round pieces of metal with a hole in the middle. You can see two of them in the first photo.

Plug power cord into PS4.
-
Touch copper pad on PS4 to power on.
-
If PS4 powers on and stays on consider it fixed. If not, proceed to next step.
-
-
-
If the PS4 still does not work after adding two washers you will then remove the heat sink clamp and add a third washer under each heat sink clamp screw.
-
-
-
After third washer has been installed and the screws have been tightened touch the power pad on the motherboard.
-
If the PS4 makes no noise and shows no lights then the screws are too tight...loosen screws very slightly (about 1/8 turn) and try to power it on again. Do this until the console powers on.
-
If the console still turns on and back off after these steps have been done then this fix will not work for your PS4.
I am wondering the significance of this fix. I have watched multiple videos ( at least 20) read guides , etc. nobody explains why this works. Does it have something to do with electricity conducting through this bracket? Sorry I am not much of an electronics guy I just love to learn why things won't work. And am also trying to repair my PS4 as well. This method works sometimes but then sometimes my PS4 fails .
If you are resorting to this fix, the heart of your PS4 is likely irreversibly damaged. By adding the washers you are making the clamp apply more pressure on the APU (main GPU/processor). There is likely a cracked solder connection and this helps to make the joint. This is not a permanent fix. If it brings more life to your system and let's you keep gaming, then it's definitely worth a try.

If your PS4 will not turn on (or turns on and right back off) after you have already had it working, try taking the cover back off and tighten the screws on the plate. If the screws are too tight the PS4 will not work at all. Slightly loosen until the system turns on. Be cautious about having the console plugged in. Possible but not recommended.
PS4 still doesn’t turn on when you push the button it keeps just beeping

If you have your whole cover off of your PS4, and it is working properly, be sure to replace the cover. The cover is designed to distribute air from the fan and keep the system cool. It will cause it to turn off on its own if over heated.
Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on websites [|]best dns servers for gaming I stumbleupon every day. It's always useful to read through articles from other authors and practice something from other sites.
I performed this repair today and my PS4 is working perfectly! If you have a machine that is not working properly, give this a shot. This cost me less than $10 including buying the Torx T8 tool.
I'm having a similar issue. When I turn on my ps4, the blue light will appear, beep, then shutdown. In that order within a second, and won't do it again unless It is unplugged and repluged. I am assuming the power supply went out. Would this work? Or is my power supply theory correct?
Hi, i am facing the exact same issue. Did you manage to find any solution to this issue. Would be really glad for any feedback

Can't believe it worked! My PS4 has been sitting useless for so long and I felt to good when I did this today and it seemed completely normal again. We'll see if this works out over time or if it starts doing the same thing again. One thing I don't get is why they don't specify the washer size you'll need if you don't want to buy the entire kit, but I guess that's just marketing. Thus, I tore squares of glossy paper (a picture I had laying around) and poked them into the nails instead of washers. Works just as well for me!
What size washers are needed for this
has this fixed your system permanently? did you have any problems since your last post?
worked for me!
and it will for a few day/weeks at most then it will fail again
What did you do to fix it after this failed I am having that problem as well . Is it a power supply issue
Yay! It worked! I was so worried about having to spend the money to have my sons ps4 repaired.. Thank you!!! I did it myself (this mom rocks!)
Go MOM!!!!!!
THANK YOU!! bought a ps4 off kijiji and it had this problem. did as u said, works amazing!! KUDOS!!!!
The solder joints between the motherboard and APU go bad and this helps to restore the connection in some cases.
I guess it’s less risky than using flux and heat gun to reflow the solder connection. You’d need the correct heat gun attachment, right temperature, and skills to pull off a reflow. Bravo!
It worked for me but I'm wondering how long the fix will last? If I want a reliable system I'm thinking of selling and getting either a slim or pro.
Fix worked then same problem occurred again. added third washer but now fan is running full blast and unit seems to not be cooling down. Solutions??
I get an error message stating that the remote controls needs to be charged. After charging the pedals the same message remains and it won't allow us to control the game. This is both controls.
What size are the washers
1mm should do fine. Guess metal over plastic, although the composites don’t deform under heat as you’d think they would…
is this fix permanent or is it used to scrape by until you can afford to a re balling?
My PS4 does not have the screws where you put the washers on I have the original PS4 but it does not have the shiny material on the left top of the system I really need a reply I need help badly
Worked I guess the plate can not be touching the metal plate still trying to understand the why behind it got fixed
This is not a repair, it might get the console to work for few days but it is not a real or permanent fix. The actual reason for the problem is one of two things, a bad soldering connection between the APU chip and the motherboard or a bad soldering connection between one or more of the graphics memory chips - 8 to 16 per console depends on the model - and the motherboard, using washers will not fix soldering issues so the problem still there even if the console work temporarily . The actual solution and real repair is Reballing the APU chip to fix the broken soldering connection and if that doesn’t fix the problem then Reballing all graphics memory chips is a must. You need to find a real professional repair company that really do Reballing to fix the console. nothing else will work. Good luck all.
Agradezco cualquier comentario.
Mine dose not have the plate. Is there a fix for these models.
it can be normal its really strange. it works sometimes, then sometimes it wont. I actually have purchased a new PS4 since then. But mine worked randomly for weeks, then it would stop working and i would have to go back and adjust my screws. Good luck!
As I was disassembling and cleaning out my PS4 I noticed a small piece of metal fall out. I'm unsure as to where it goes so that I can put it back in place. Assuming it has something to do with why my power button doesn't work, and as to why my disc goes in and out, as well as my system randomly making beaking sounds when and when not touched. The piece is L shaped. It has 2 different shaped holes on it. Where does it belong?
I used this guide today to perform the repair and my PS4 now works perfectly! I tried every other fix out there for the blue light of death… If you have a machine that is not working properly, give this a shot. The fix cost me less than $10 including buying the Torx T8 tool. I understand that this fix may not work forever or address the underlying cause, so I backed up my machine and keeping my fingers crossed until the PS5 comes out.
I have a newer model the cuh 1200 i think, but the same problem. One time beep and blue light hoes on but does not stay on. What could it be?
Will this work if the ps4 stays powered on for 10 minutes before shutting itself off?
Can you make a video how it works withe the ps4 pro
I wanted to try to open the cover of the ps4 pro but I didn't manage it, then I plugged it back into all the cables and it beeps blue light but only comes for 2 seconds and goes out again without making a noise
I wanted to clean the fan because it is too loud
and i regretted it
I tried it but still, I was playing a game then it turned of I cleaned the inside 3 times but still ..I don't kno what to do but my ps4 is like 5 years now
Please help am very depressed since I can't afford a new ps4 now, I hate to set my eyes on it cause it gives me headaches……please help it just beep, blue light comes for like 3sec then
This is a very temporary solution to a very simple problem. I’ve seen so many PS4s in our repair shop that have done this, and it has caused significantly worse problems long term. Putting that much strain on the CPU can cause BGA solder balls to crack, or potentially damage the APU. Usually, you just need to clean the heatsink and use a good thermal compound to fix overheating issues like this. Please do not destroy your PlayStation doing this…
Merci !
I want to thank ifixit for the guide to fix my ps4. Everything work as it was shown but when I put back the cover back on to the PS4 I would turn on again just beeps every time I hit the on/off button.
Thank You
Pete
So, I followed ifixit tutorial to clean the PS4 fan, then my PlayStation didn't turn on..
I have no idea why. I followed this tutorial and tried everything including last solution, but not working!
Anyone got a solution?
I am glad this works for people but doesn’t this procedure reduce the tension on the spring? If you wanted the heatsink to clamp tighter on the chip then you would need to raise the center of the spring plate.
That was exactly my thought - it appears this procedure would have the effect of reducing the pressure on the CPU rather than increasing it. I'm with you; I don't see how this would work either.
What size are the washers?
