Title
(AAA) Cleaning battery corrosion on a Minolta Maxxum 5000/7000/9000 battery corrosion
Introduction
If you have an old or newly acquired Maxxum 5000/7000/9000 and notice battery corrosion, this guide will show you how to clean the corrosion.
=== ***GUIDE NOTES*** ===
* ***You MUST replace all batteries -- NO EXCEPTIONS! One leak means the rest will.***
* ***THIS GUIDE ONLY COVERS THE AAA COVER, AS THE DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE IS UNIQUE.***
** ***''AA covers do not need to be disassembled; neutralize. The corrosion can be cleaned without disassembly.''***
* ***The nickel plating will be stained or stripped. There is no way to fix this without a nickel replate.*** ItThe cover can be cleaned without neutralization first to reduce the damage first, but cannot be avoided. ***If*** ***the corrosion is left untreated, it may ruin the cover beyond repair!***
* ***IF THE ALKALINE SITS TOO LONG, IT CAN DAMAGE THE COVER BEYOND REPAIR, ESPECIALLY THE THIN CONTACTS EMBEDDED IN THE SCREW PLATE. In some cases,If there is corossion on the screw plate tabs, these may require light sanding.*** ***If the corrosion cannot be fully removed and it prevents electrical contactcamera still does not turn on, the cover must be replaced.***
=== ***Battery replacement options*** ===
In the event thatIf your original AAA cover is unrepairable, there are varyinga few Lithium options which are recommended over Alkaline.
* ***2CR5:*** ***This is a specialized battery onlyPrimarily used in analogfilm cameras (and +some early digital), and some binoculars.*** ***''You will need to buy these online, or from a camera shop with regular film customers. Some'' Generally speaking, retail availability is poor. Check your area first.***
** ***''While most
big box retailers like Walmartonly sell them onlineonline only, some Best Buys may have a handful in stock in-store as well. However, they cost way too much.''***

** ***''You
While you may also have luckget lucky at some drug stores (Walgreens, CVS, RiteAid, etc), DO NOT rely on this. However, most drugDrug store customers primarily use digital or their smartphone.''***
*** ***''While these are the better choice, availability can be an issue unless there's a camera shop nearby where you are shooting your camera
cameras. Verify or carry 3+1 in camera before using todayDrug stores destroy negatives.''***
* ***CR123: Commonly used in gun scopes, binoculars and some distance calculators, as well as otherplus high draw devices. Not cheap, but far easier to find (especially in bulk). Performance will be similar to a 2CR5, as the 2CR5 is 2x123 cells welded together. Not used in mostcommon on later Minoltas; they use the 2CR5, but was a later option.***
* ***CR2: Again, mostly used inAnother common gun scopesscope and distance calculators and othercalculator battery also used in high draw devices. These are also easy to find, but less common then the CR123. While you see these around, most of the items mentioned above use the CR123 battery. Sometimes used''These are sometimes found in later Minolta cameras like the Maxxum 5 and QTsi and /STsi, but none of the older ones (out.'' These can of the box). Canlargely be ignored.***
=== NOT RECOMMENDED ===
* ''Budget: Like-for-like AA or AAA battery cover. Use Primary Lithium or NiMh. Beyond 10 packs, this is too expensive, and conversion is more cost effective.''
** ''***NOTE:*** ***Runtime will be less than what a specialized battery provides, but this is the cheap(er) way to prevent the issue from coming back. While not as good, these are sold everywhere.***''
