We’ve seen a lot of unprecedented Apple products this year—a smartwatch, an extra large iPad, even an iPad stylus and keyboard. So it shouldn’t really surprise us that Apple released an external battery case for the iPhone—the Smart Battery Case. We’re not expecting much in terms of repairability, but we definitely want to see what’s inside. Time for a teardown.
Smart Battery teardown highlights:
- Apple uses a soft, reinforced elastomer hinge design to accommodate all that bump in the trunk and to allow your phone to slide easily in and out of the case.
- With 7.13 Whr (1877 mAh at 3.8 V) capacity, this battery more than doubles your iPhone 6s (6.55 Whr) capacity.
- For such a Smart battery, it looks like most of the brains probably live in software on your iPhone. We only find some rudimentary ICs inside:
• NXP NX20P3 load switch, also found in Lightning to USB cables
• NXP 1608A1 charging IC, also found in all of the new Magic accessories
