The battery had expanded/exploded and cracked the trackpad.

Using the step by step instructions on IFIXIT I was able to replace both the battery and trackpad in just over a half hour. I was apprehensive when I turned the computer back on after such a quick repair, but it booted right up without a problem. Since I didn't need to take it to the Apple store, IFIXIT just saved me several weeks without a computer and several hundred dollar!
