I believe that a higher resolution display would have a wider ribbon cable, and not plug into the motherboard. However, if I'm wrong on that guess, or if a screen the same as the original is used, nothing else should need to be replaced.
Alan, your drive might not be getting enough power to operate. I had the same issue with a 4GB USB flash drive, and using another computer and plugging it in directly (without going through USB hubs ets.) worked. You may have to try more than one computer to get it to work properly. However, if the flash drive worked fine on the same computer it's now having problems with and spontaneously started having problems, formatting it may help.
