Motor is unresponsive
When the triggered is pulled nothing happens.
Battery is dead
If the impact wrench does nothing when the trigger is pulled, first check to see if you have a dead battery. Remove the battery from the bottom of the tool, then attach a known charged battery.
Poor contacts between the battery and the battery terminals
If you are certain the battery has charge, then check to see if the contacts on the bottom of the tool are dirty or corroded. If so, clean them with a brush and contact cleaner.
Brushes are dirty or worn out
Over time, the brushes in the tool will become worn and dirty to the point that the tool will cease to function. In this case, the brush assembly will need to be replaced.
Switch assembly is faulty
If the battery and contacts are good, and the brush assembly is clean and functioning, then the culprit may be the switch assembly. Replace the switch assembly.
Motor is faulty
If the battery contacts, brushes, and the switch assembly are all working properly, then you need to replace the motor.
Motor is overheating
The wrench stops working a few minutes in to use, and the body above the motor is hot to the touch.
Brushes are dirty or worn out
If the motor is getting very hot to the touch, you may have dirty or worn brushes. Replace the brush assembly.
Battery won't charge
When the battery is placed on the charger, the charging LEDs do not illuminate.
Dirty or corroded contacts
Check the contacts on both the battery and the bottom of the tool. If they are dirty or corroded, clean them with a brush and contact cleaner.
Battery is faulty
If you have charged the battery, and the wrench is not working, test the battery with a volt meter. Place the positive lead of your volt meter on the positive contact of your battery and the negative lead on the negative contact. If you do not see approximately 20 volts on the display of the volt meter, then chances are your battery is not good. Replace the battery with a new one.
Charger is faulty
If you put a battery on the charger and it does not charge the battery, but a different charger will charge the battery, your charger may be faulty. Replace the charger.
LED lights are not coming on
When the tool is in use, but the LEDs are not illuminating.
Poor connection to switch assembly
Open the tool and check the wire connection that goes from the motor assembly to the switch assembly. If the connection is loose or disconnected, reconnect it. If the wires are damaged, replace the wires.
Switch assembly is faulty
Disconnect the switch, remove it, and replace it with a new one.
Forward reverse button is stuck
With lots of use tools can get dirt and debris in-between parts.
Dirt or debris in the body of the drill
Remove the forward reverse button and check for any possible dirt or debris. Remove any dirt or debris from the drill and then reinstall the forward reverse button.
Forward reverse selector is broken
Remove forward reverse selector and replace with a new forward reverse selector.
Bit keeps slipping in the chuck
The bit will not stay secure in the chuck, when the tool is used, bits slip.
The bit is not properly secured in the chuck
Remove the bit and inspect the chuck for any possible damage. If no damage is found, reinstall the bit and properly secure it in the chuck.
Chuck is damaged or broken
Remove the chuck from the drill and replace with a new chuck.

I have a DCF885 that is slipping when you try to put a screw into wood, & also in reverse. it smells similar to a clutch slipping. Other than that, it runs great until you need to do something.
any ideas would be great.
thanks, Dave

Hardly used DeWalt impact won’t work after you release the trigger. The only way it will work again is to remove the battery and reattach

Your light is probably staying on while not in use and heats the battery. Mine is doing the same thing.

My DCF885 Dewalt ONLY operates at a 10th of the power. Contacts are clean - light is bright - battery is fully charged and checked with other tools.
Any suggestions? Besides buying a new one.

My DCF885 is pretty new and was working fine. During some work, it just stopped. When I pull the trigger, the LED's blink once - and nothing happens. Changing batteries does not help and it makes no noise. I can manually turn the shaft forward and backward, but pulling the trigger only blinks the LEDs one time. Any help is greatly appreciated. mark@termark-properties.com

I just replaced the clamshell on my dcf885 impact driver, now I noticed the forward/reverse selector goes the opposite direction for e.g when I push in the selector on the right side it should go forward, it doesn't it goes reverse, same when I push in on the left side it should go reverse but it goes forward, was it something I switched when I put it back together?
