Device Turns Off While Vacuuming
The device makes noises and then suddenly turns off.
Blockages
There may be debris blocking the suction, causing the device to shut off. Check for blockages by disassembling the wand from the roller head and the bin. Check inside and around each component. Be careful of sharp objects and debris. Remove any obstructions.
Clogged Filter
The filter could be clogged and may need cleaning. Remove the filter by pulling out the purple knob labeled "filter" located at the top of the bin. Rinse the filter by running it under water for 2 minutes. When done, gently shake the filter to remove any debris. Gently wring out the filter to remove excess water. Allow 24 hours for the filter to dry. After a minimum of 24 hours, replace the filter back into the bin and continue with normal use.
Low Battery Level
The battery may not be fully charged for normal operation. Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours. A flashing yellow light indicates that there is no power or that the battery is too hot or too cold. A flashing red light requires further assistance from the Dyson Helpline.
Battery Life is Too Short
The device does not stay on long enough to complete the vacuuming task.
Low Battery Level
The battery may not be fully charged for normal operation. Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours. A flashing yellow light indicates that there is no power or that the battery is too hot or too cold.. A flashing red light requires further assistance from the Dyson Helpline.
Dead Battery
When the device no longer powers on even after charging, it most likely has a damaged battery. The battery is unable to charge and will need to be replaced. A replacement guide can be found here.
Bin is Clogged with Dirt
The bin is no longer clear and is filled with debris.
Bin Needs to Be Cleaned
The debris clogging the bin may need to be cleaned carefully and completely. Push the red button on the bin case down, over a garbage can. Press the red button again to release the clear bin from the main body. Remove the bin carefully and clean using only a damp cloth. Do not use any cleaning agents besides a damp cloth to preserve the life of your machine. Make sure the bin is completely dry before replacing. Replace the bin with the bin base door open. Snap the bin into place over the cyclone shroud. Close the bin base door so that it clicks secure.
Cyclone Shroud Needs to Be Cleaned
After the bin is cleaned, the cyclone shroud may also need cleaning to ensure normal operation. After removing the bin, use the brush on the combination tool to remove dust and lint from the cyclone shroud. Do not put the cyclone shroud under water. Make sure the bin is completely dry before replacing. Replace the bin with the bin base door open. Snap the bin into place over the cyclone shroud. Close the clear bin base door so that it clicks secure.
Weak Suction Power
The vacuum loses suction while in operation, or the suction is weak.
Blockages
There may be larger debris blocking the suction from functioning properly. If there are objects blocking the suction, the device will shut off. Check for blockages by disassembling the wand from the roller head and the bin. Check inside and around each one. Be careful of sharp objects and debris. Remove any obstructions.
Clogged Roller Head
There may be debris preventing the roller head from operating normally. Disconnect the roller head from the wand. If you are unable to remove debris, you may have to remove the brush bar. Unlock the brush bar by using a coin to turn the dial marked with a padlock into the unlock position. Carefully remove the brush bar and remove the debris. After cleaning, refit the brush bar. Secure it by using a coin to tighten the dial marked with a padlock so that it is once again in the lock position.
Brush Bar Stops Rotating
The roller head no longer rotates when the device is on.
Clogged Brush Bar in the Soft Roller Head
There may be debris preventing the roller head from operating normally. Disconnect the roller head from the wand. Unlock the brush bar by using a coin to turn the dial marked with a padlock into the unlock position. Carefully remove the brush bar and remove the debris. If there is a blockage in the flat floor tool, remove debris from the base plate. Unlock the base plate by using a coin to turn the dial marked with a padlock into the unlock position. After cleaning, refit the brush bar. Secure it by using a coin to tighten the dial marked with a padlock so that it is once again in the lock position. Replace the base plate, and secure it by using a coin to tighten the dial marked with a padlock so that it is once again in the lock position.
Clogged Brush Bar in the Hard Roller Head
There may be debris preventing the roller head from operating normally. Disconnect the roller head from the wand. Unlock the brush bar by using a coin to turn the dial marked with a padlock into the unlock position. Carefully remove the brush bar from the roller head and clear any debris. Replace the brush bar back into the roller head and secure it by using a coin to tighten the dial marked with a padlock so that it is once again in the lock position.

even when fully charged the v6 surges in other words suction/ stops, suction/ stops, etc.does this mean I need to get a new battery unit if so where from, is only around 18 months old.

I don’t know if you got an answer for this, but I just solved the same problem. It was a blockage right where it goes into the dust canister. Pulled the blockage out and it went right back to working.

Same thing happened to mine with the off and on rapid occurrence, when the bin is off, clean the screen with a small brush and you will see e inner compartments clogged with dust. Those have to be cleared too by knocking the top and brushing the screen to loosen that inner dust……then your dyson will run smoothly

There are two little metal tabs sitting above the lever of the bin and are meant to make electrical contact to the wires running around the bin and down the wand to the motorhead to power the rotating brush.Those metal-tabs tend to get bend and/or their ends might have become dislocated out of their brackets.Best to follow the steps of removing the Main Body from the Cyclone to get them metal-tabs back in place.

Had same problem!
However discovered it was hair caught around the brush.
To clear look to the front of the head to the left hand side. There is another padlock. Turn thar around and the brush will drop out. Also have a look in the unit you have removed.
Mine is now completely hair free and works like new! Result

My Dyson keeps going on/off while I’m using t but only in the max mode and it doesn’t do it if I don’t have any attachments on it. I have checked for blockages in all the compartments to no avail! I cannot figure this out, I bought mine second hand so no paperwork for warranty or anything :(

Bought mine about 2 years ago, and it lasts only for 10 secs when fully charged. Then I have to put it back on charging for few minutes. Then it is working for about 2 - 3 minutes which is still very bad result. What is the solution?

Hi, I wash my filter on a regular basis and empty the cylinder after each use. My Dyson stops and starts when the filter needs washing, so I duly did this as per instructions. Left it to dry but it smelt! Popped it back in the machine but it still kept stopping and starting. Washed filter again, but still smelly. I got my husband to dismantle the filter for me and it was clogged with hair and dirt. I was appalled! If it required doing this I would have done so much earlier. Instructions do not suggest this - just rinse through thoroughly then gently squeeze and dry for 24 hours. However if it is clogged up then just rinsing it under the tap is insufficient!

Did you ever get an answer? I have the same issue - it rotates and then stops. I let go of the trigger, start again, and it rotates again for about four seconds and then stops.

I am unable to open the dirt bin by pulling up on the top red lever to release the door on bottom. I have tried pulling and it won’t budge. I don’t want to break it putting too much force on the red lever. Is there a video that shows how I can release the door and empty debris? Otherwise this thing is useless to me. In order to charge the unit, Dyson V6Trigger vacuum, the charge cable was connected to AC outlet. The blue lights on both bottoms of the handle came on for about 5 minutes, and then the blue lights turned off themselves. Accordingly, the unit was not charged. Please advise.

My motor head 94985204 does not spin. A repair man in Green Bay told me I my motor head is burned out. I have had my Dyson for about 4 years and lived it until this happened. The price of a new motor head is $148.73. Shouldn’t this be covered under a warranty?

I just had a similar problem, changed battery, the white crown thing, still did not power. Saw on YouTube to spin the motor on the power unit, only with the crown off and no battery. Spun it one direction for about three times, no go. Spun it three times the other direction, ta da. The replacement battery I got sounds more powerful, unfortunately I brought a newer Dyson so I have two now.

V6 Two years old, Roller head was intermittent, but with a little light pressure pushing roller head against the swivel joint it would work. Dismantled the swivel joint to reveal what I can only determine as a manufacturering fault … two clean cuts in the white and black wires. The white wires copper inner was exposed but still holding, the black completely but cleanly broken. Thus when applying a little pressure the ends were making contact and making the roller spin. Managed to reconnect the broken ends and Hey Presto !, but what a job ! . What concerns me is this could have shorted out in the charging process and who knows what may have happened. It clearly was NOT a wear and tear fault. So if your having problems with the roller check the wiring in the swivel joint. Hope this may save you a £70 replacement ! … DISGUSTING !

I have a v6 animal,
replaced the motorhead due to acrid smell and smoke from the motorhead. After installing new Motorhead and putting in charge I get the following:
blue light for 5-7 seconds,
no light,
fast red flashing light.
any ideas? Going to try charge for a few hours. I am thinking the battery is really low in charge

Sounds like the battery has had it if it wont hold any charge. You can try charging and then discharging what little charge it will take a few times, it may possibly bring it back to life. Fingers crossed … if not, time to get a new battery !.

SAME. I regularly empty our bin and rinse our filter, and have cleaned (and re-cleaned) the brush head to make sure nothing’s tangled up in it. Even still, the vacuum’s only running for 40-60 seconds at a time, and has been for awhile. Suggestions here would be amazing.

Floor head is vibrating sending the vibrations up the tube to the motor head where you can feel them. Floor head brush is clean but feels a bit looser than it used to when I turn it. There is free play when I rotate it backwards and forwards

The spiral spindle that the head goes into is probably clogged. You need to take out the roller and use a t7 or t8 torque screwdriver to take the screw out and wiggle the spindle out to clean the hair out. Ive just did this and its working perfect now

Hi I had a similar problem, after cleaning it as usual and taking out filters and making sure all dust was removed, I noticed that when I emptied it the flap that lets the dust pass through was static (it was not flapping), so I unstuck the flap and now it works better than before (has more suction).

My charging cord does not appear to fit snuggly into its receptacle and therefore will not charge. This is a new problem. It has been charging adequately until now. I see many people have an issue with the battery when fully charged. My Dyson V6 only lasts 10 seconds with a fully charged batter. If you are having an on/off cycle while fully charged, make sure you clear the valve between the dust collection basket and suction arm, mine was stick with debris, once cleared it finally worked like a charm

It is only intermittent on high power when I switch to low it works ok
BUT sometimes it is intermittent on both speeds I have a spare filter
cleaned ready but it still the same if I pull filter out slightly it works

My Dyson V6 off the charger will work for approx. 30 seconds then stop and blue light is flashing. You plug it back into the charger and the blue light will flash for approx. 10 seconds and go back to solid blue indicating its fully charged and then it will work without any problems. Any help?

I had the same issue of the brush not rotating. I did all the things I could think of, then called support. My Dyson was less than a year old, and the support guy said that I needed to purchase a brand new one, but willing to give me a 10% discount. No way…. looked on internet, what worked was that the contact to the battery needed to be cleaned. Where the canister part clips into the handle, at very top is the connection, its metal and little. I cleaned it really good and have never had another issue with the brush. Hope this helps! Btw…because they were unwilling to stand behind their product including not telling me that little secret, I love my Dyson, but I will NEVER purchase another one. If they don’t believe in their product, then neither do I.

Pulsating on and off turned out to be thick fluff and dust clogging the short tube that goes into the clear dust cannister...Need long tweezers to pull out..works fine now.

Carole, thank you for posting this video! I had no idea you could take apart the top filter (mine was chock full of hair and dirt despite rinsing it regularly) OR that the back filter even existed. The doughnut-shaped part disintegrated when I removed it so will need to figure that out, but I really appreciate the video!
