Device won’t turn on
Your Garmin Nuvi 56LMT does not power on.
Broken charging cable
Taking the charging cable in hand, feel along the length of the wire for kinks or frays. Any breaks or exposed wires may cause device failure. Observe the housing where the charger would connect into the lighter socket. If any cracks in the casing are visible, the device may not be fitting properly. Observe the metal prongs on either side of the fitting. If the prongs are bent and not making contact with the lighter socket, the device will not charge.
Dead Battery
Remove the power cable from the device after powering it off. Attempt to power the device back on. If the device does not turn on, then the battery may no longer be functional. If the device turns on, but does not maintain a lasting charge from a previously charged battery it may also be in need of a change.
Faulty Power Button
The button either takes longer than usual, or does not pop back up at all. This could be due to a faulty spring (see power button spring replacement).
Touchscreen display is not working properly
Video image is blurred, completely off, or unresponsive.
Touchscreen needs calibration
If when attempting to touch a certain button on the screen, the device instead activates a separate button, this indicates that the touch screen calibration is off and needs adjusting. First power off the device. Before powering back on hold your finger to the screen at the top left corner of the device. Power it on, and keep it pressed there till the white screen calibration menu appears. Follow along by touching the block dots to calibrate the device.
Screen does not display image
Firstly, check the device for cracks or fractures in the display. If powered on, the screen remains black or a solid color, this is another sign of a faulty screen. If the screen displays strange lines, blurry images, or is too dim for use the LCD may be compromised. Any such occurrence can cause failure of the device and require replacement.
Dead Battery
If the screen is blacked out or unresponsive the device could not have enough energy to operate. Try to recharge the battery completely. If this does not work the battery will most likely have to be replaced.
Sound is Faulty or Not Functioning
Device appears to be working but is not producing sound.
Broken or Faulty Speaker
Test the audio by powering on the device. In the main menu tap volume. With your finger move the slider as far to the right as possible. Observe the mute toggle button on the left hand side. If the button is highlighted, orange the device is muted. Tap the mute symbol again to un-mute the device. You should hear an audible notification from the speaker.
Dead Battery
Remove the power cable from the device after powering it off. Attempt to power the device back on. If the device does not turn on, then the battery may no longer be functional. If the device turns on, but does not maintain a lasting charge from a previously charged battery, it may also be in need of a change.
Motherboard may need replacement
The Garmin Nuvi has very few components and is in turn easy to diagnose an error with turning on the device. If replacing the battery does not solve the problem you will most likely have to replace the motherboard.
Faulty Power Button
The button either takes longer than usual or does not pop back up at all. This could be due to a faulty spring (see power button spring replacement).
GPS mount will not hold
Device falls from its mounting location routinely.
Insufficiently Clean Surface
Check the suction cup and window to make sure they are clean and dry. Try to reapply mount to the surface.
Worn Down Mount
After an extended period of time the mount could become worn out and no longer able to support the weight of the GPS. The mount will need to be replaced. See (Garmin Nuvi 56lmt mount replacement.)
Maps no Longer up to Date
‘’Noticing newer roads are not showing up on your device.’’
The Map Database Needs Updating
Firstly connect your device to a computer with the included wire. Make sure the computer has internet access. In the devices setting menu tap the update maps icon and follow the onscreen instructions.
