“The computer is on but the screen is black.”

Backlight is off

If the screen is black or unresponsive, it can be caused by the backlight settings or the brightness settings, making the backlight go off. If the brightness setting is in its lowest, the backlight will go off. In order to check the brightness settings, hold the “fn” key (on the bottom left of your keyboard) and start pressing repeatedly the F8 key (on the top of your keyboard). The F8 key is marked with an up arrow, indicating that will increase the brightness of your screen. You should notice a difference in screen brightness if this is your issue.

Backlight is damaged or dead

If the brightness adjustment does not work, it might be due to the backlight being damaged or dead. In the case of the backlight being damaged or dead. You can use this HP Pavilion G60-630US Backlight Replacement guide to find the solution.

Damaged capacitor

First, clean your vents and fans. Having a dirty vent or fan can cause your device to become extremely hot and cause many internal problems. A simple fix is cleaning the vent and fan. If your computer still overheats it can be a sign that you have a faulty vent or fan and have to replace them. Refer to the following guide to replace the vent and fan.

Startup failure

Take note on the error code stated by the computer for the fail on startup. If the code stated says that the device failed on startup a Hard Reset your device can help to solve this problem. Just hold down the power button till the computer shuts down. Let the computer sit for some time (an hour is more than enough) and then try to do start up again.

Computer crashes due to operating system failure (OS)

If a hard reset does not work for solving the blue screen you may need to reinstall the OS (operating system). Use an OS disk that is the same as the Computer's OS and let it reinstall your systems from scratch.

Power button doesn’t work (unresponsive)

“When pressed, the power button does not turn on the computer.”

No power

Check to see if your battery is charged or there is power going to your device. If your battery is not charged, you can plug it in and allow the device to charge. If this doesn't work you may have a power problem. If this is the problem you are having you will want to look into the battery not charged part of the troubleshooting page.

Faulty button

If power button does not respond the button itself may be broken and will require that a new power button will need to be installed. If this is the case you will have to open up the computer. Here is a guide on how to access and replace the power button.

Power button is sticky or stuck in place

If the button had dirt in it, that can cause the button to not work. To clean the button, try to remove anything physically holding down the button or that is under the button gently and with as little liquid/moisture as possible.

Computer is slow

“Computer is very slow and takes a long time to load, do tasks, or open windows.”

Too many programs open

If there are many programs running at once it can slow down the computer. Close programs first to see if your computer will return to normal speed. If this does not help speed up the computer, the problem may be due to the internal components of the computer.

Not enough RAM

If your computer is running slow you may need to install a new RAM card so that it can properly run during normal operations. In order to do this though, you will need to open up the computer. Here is the guide that shows you how to replace the RAM card.

Hard drive error

If the Ram is not the problem it may be a problem with the hard drive. To see if this is the problem you should run a hard drive diagnostic. If the diagnostic test fails it means the hard drive is bad and needs replaced. To do that the computer will need to be opened up. Here is a guide that you can follow on how to replace the hard drive.

Battery doesn’t hold a charge, dies quickly

“The Laptop does not turn on because there is no power in your battery.”

Battery is not charged

Make sure your battery is charged, if your device won’t turn on it may be because it is dead. By simply plugging your device into a power source to charge, you can see if there are other issues with your battery or if it was just dead.

Broken cord

If your charging cord is broken or damaged it will not efficiently charge your device. Simply getting a new cord you can improve the charging time of your device.

AC adapter is damaged

The power cord has two parts which connect together so that you can charge your battery from a standard power outlet. The AC adapter (the black rectangle that the charging cord connects to) can fry out over time or due to a sudden power outage shorting it out. This part is designed to fry out instead of your computer. To see if this is the case take another AC adapter and plug it into you computer with the the power cord to see if it will charge when plugged into a power outlet..

Faulty battery

After determining your charging cord and AC adapter do not need replaced, the problem may be with the computer’s battery. If the battery dies quickly or won’t hold a charge you will need to replace it. Refer to the following guide to replace your devices battery.
