The Basics
- The TV or Monitor is Off or Doesn't Work: Before troubleshooting any issues, ensure the TV or monitor is powered on and working correctly. If you have a smart TV, ensure you have installed the newest software.
- Faulty AV or HDMI Connection: If your TV or monitor turns on and displays other devices, the AV or HDMI cord connecting the Xbox to the TV may be damaged or improperly connected, or the HDMI port plugged into it might be broken.
- Check the Xbox cord for damage. If you can't see any visible damage, try a new cord and plug it into the Xbox and TV.
- If your TV has more than one HMDI port, plug the cord into one of them. If another device shows up on the TV using a different HMDI port, connect the Xbox cord to that port. Adjust the input settings to ensure your screen is set to display the proper port's input.
- Ensure that your console is not having power issues: If your console is not showing any signs of powering on, you should check out our Xbox Will Not Turn On page.
- Perform a Hard Reboot: Hard rebooting your console will resolve any significant software issues that could prevent your system from rebooting normally.
- For the Xbox 360 consoles, you'll need to turn the console off and then hold the Bind button (the small button next to the front USB flap) while you turn on the console on the console's power button.
Incorrect Systems settings
Solution: Adjust your video output settings
There is a known issue when you attempt to watch Blu-ray disks if your console's refresh rate is 24Hz.
- Configure the Xbox’s graphic setting for anything that's not 24Hz.
- Open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Video Modes and change the refresh rate to something other than 24Hz.
If you can't see enough of your screen to change the video settings, you must boot the console in safe mode:
- Eject any discs in the console.
- Press the power button for 10 seconds.
- Press and hold the power and eject buttons until you hear two beeps (make sure to hold the buttons until the second beep- 10 seconds after the first).
- With the console in low-resolution mode, select Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Video Modes and then change the resolution to match your TV.
If the problem continues, try turning off the variable refresh rate on your TV.
Corrupt System Files
Solution: Factory Reset your Console
Occasionally, issues could occur when your system's files become corrupted. If this is the case, you must factory reset your Console.
Following these steps will reset your console, and will remove your local saved data. Be sure to back up your saved game data to an external storage drive.
- Press the Guide button to open the guide.
- Select Settings > System Settings.
- On the System Settings screen, select Console Settings > System Info.
- Write down your console serial number (you must enter it later), then press the B button.
- Select Storage.
- On the Storage Devices screen, select Hard Drive and press the Y button to access Device Options.
- On the Device Options screen, select Format.
- On the Format Device screen, you’ll see the following message. Select Yes.
This will remove all content on this device. Do you want to continue?
- On the Format Hard Drive screen, select Enter Serial Number, and then enter the number on the next screen.
- Press the Start button. You’ll see a Formatting in progress message with a progress bar. After completing the process, you’ll be returned to the Home screen.
For systems like the Xbox One and newer, you are going to use the following steps.
- Turn the system on and press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
- Select Reset Console.
- Choose the reset option you want: The first option is to Reset and remove everything. This full reset will remove all data from your Xbox or Reset and keep my games & apps. This partial reset will not delete your games or game data (Good if you cannot back up your data).
Faulty Motherboard
Solution: Replace the Motherboard
What if your Xbox still does not power up, even after following all the troubleshooting steps above? Signs point toward a problem with the motherboard or surrounding components.
- Perform a thorough visual inspection of the circuit boards for any signs of burns or damaged components. Suppose you observe any visible damage, such as burns or parts that appear to be physically damaged. In that case, you may need to replace the motherboard.
