The Basics
- The TV or Monitor is Off or Doesn't Work: Before troubleshooting any issues, ensure the TV or monitor is powered on and working correctly. If you have a smart TV, ensure you have installed the newest software.
- Faulty HDMI Connection: If your TV or monitor turns on and displays other devices, the HDMI cord connecting the console to the TV may be damaged or improperly connected, or the HDMI port plugged into it might be broken.
- Check the Xbox HDMI cord for damage. If you can't see any visible damage, try a new HDMI cord and plug it into the Xbox and TV.
- Plug the HDMI cord into a different port on your TV if there's more than one. If another device shows up on the TV using a different HDMI port, connect the Xbox HDMI cord to that port. Adjust the input settings to ensure your screen is set to display the proper port's input.
- Ensure that your console is not having power issues: If your console is not showing any signs of powering on, you should check out our Xbox Will Not Turn On page.
- Perform a Hard Reboot: Hard rebooting your console will resolve any significant software issues that could prevent your system from rebooting normally.
- For the Xbox 360 consoles, you'll need to turn the console off and then hold the Bind button (the small button next to the front USB flap) while you turn on the console on the console's power button.
- For the Xbox One and up, hold the power button on the front of the console for 10 seconds, releasing it only after the device shuts down.
Incorrect Systems settings
Solution: Adjust your video output settings
Their is a known issue when you attempt to watch Blu-ray disks if your console's refresh rate is set to 24Hz.
- Configure the Xbox’s graphic setting for anything that's not 24Hz.
- Open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Video Modes and then change the refresh rate to anything that isn't 24Hz.
If you can't see enough of your screen to change the video settings you must boot the console in safe mode:
- Eject any discs in the console.
- Press the power button for 10 seconds.
- Press and hold the power and eject buttons until you hear two beeps (make sure to hold the buttons until the second beep- 10 seconds after the first).
- Now with the console in low-resolution mode, select Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Video Modes and then change the resolution to match your TV.
If the problem continues try turning off the variable refresh rate on your TV.

Faulty Motherboard
Solution: Replace the Motherboard
What if your Xbox still does not power up, even after following all the troubleshooting steps above? Signs point toward a problem with the motherboard or surrounding components.
Newer consoles require replacing the motherboard with the disk drive since the two are serialized together.
- Perform a thorough visual inspection of the circuit boards for any signs of burns or damaged components. Suppose you observe any visible damage, such as burns or parts that appear to be physically damaged. In that case, you may need to replace the motherboard.
