How can you tell if iMac is worth fixing or replacing?

I bought 2 iMacs at a yard sale. One, is just a shell and has no guts and is pretty much a paper weight. The other is the A1076 20 in version. I opened it up and it is missing the power supply, HD, and a couple other components. Other than that, it seems to be in ok shape visually.

How can I tell if it is worth getting the parts to get it running. Is there a way to test it somehow to see if the screen/works works or if the logic board is good? I looked it up online and all the parts would run me about $600 +/-. Would LOVE to fix it up, but don't want to spend the cash to rebuild it if it turns out be around the same price to buy a new one.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Update

Thanks for your answers. Mactech plus: The logic board looks OK, I am pretty proficient in repair on Macs, replacing HDs, keyboards, etc, but DO NOT know anything regarding the logic board. I looked at it and it seems OK. No seepage or anything like that from anything.

Is there a way to test the circuits or to see if the display will work without buying all the stuff first?

Thanks again for your opinions.

The G5 iMac has been having so much problems with Capacitors in the power supply and logic board that unless you just have money to blow I would just use them as paper weights and use the money to buy an Intel iMac off of ebay or a new one. I have a G5 iMac that Apple repaired and it lasted 9 months before the Capacitors on the board Apple replaced started leaking. I have a set of replacement Capacitors for it but think I will just use it as a paper weight.

It really is not worth it IN MY OPINION. Others may say go of it and it is your money.

I think that mactech is right - if you can't repair it by yourself - please do yourself a favour and forget it, sell the stuff and get a working one.

(here comes a little explanation - thats only my opinion -)

i like the old g5 better than the isight or intel models - all iMacs have their problems - the new ones have also problems.

think about it - 600$ - thats a lot of cash - especially in a country where mac's are kinda bargain, a 21.5" costs 1199$ in the us apple store - the same model costs in germany 1099€ - thats 1484$

- BUT - lets come back to the G5 - i paid for a defective 20" G5 115$ (87€) - shipping included, chaged parts for about 10$ and the beaast was working again - thats a priceclass where i would buy it again, even if a had to do some stuff every 9 month - but that is only my opinion and thats only because i can fix those problems on my own.

if you can't change capacitors or rework the gpu - do yourself a favour and forget it (as i said above)

Even assuming the LB is OK, that computer at this point in time is only worth $500-600, in my opinion. Probably not worth the effort, sadly. What other components are missing? PSs are only about $120 and HDs are cheap. Just wondering what it needs that's worth $600.

I got one working again by changing the caps (not really easy to do) and baked the logicboard 45 min at 140 degree centigrade (not kidding) I know it's kind of a cowboy repair (don't forget to remove the backup battery before you put it in the oven, i did). It works a charm now but i woudn't sell a "repair" like that.

hi karsten, long time no see - the good old baking method can work, but 140°C is almost to low for Pb free solderings - btw: never use a aluminum baking tray - it would take some time to find all the parts in the oven

I'll have you to know cowboys use bob wire and duck tape for repairs. Them toes your a steppin' on are the tips of my ridin' boots.
