Touch Screen Ghost Clicks and Flickering

After replacing my screen with a screen replacement, at least for my case I think I found the solution.

My symptoms: ghost clicks, touches not detected, sometimes even battery problems (battery would not charge, displaying wrong charge and random reboots).

I noticed that, when holding the phone in certain positions, some (or even all) of the ghost clicking would stop, and basically the screen could work flawlessly. After reading boomvalk's answer on possible contact with connectors and aluminium parts, since my bottom screws (the ones around the lightning connector) were lost, I decided to give it a try.

Moved the small protective tape from the original broken screen to the new replacement screen, but unfortunately, no success. Then, I noticed that, the back of the screen replacement had the aluminium part exposed completely, as opposed to the original screen which had some kind of protective black layer. I also remembered that, my screen replacement came with a pink plastic cover on the back, which I think was meant to be discarded when installing it. I decided to put it back on and then close the frame and turn it on.

And voila! it works! I am not sure what part of the aluminium back of the screen replacement was making contact with some other electronics inside the phone, but nonetheless the thin pink plastic cover covered it, and now it is working flawlessly for one day, holding the phone in as many positions as I could.

Ok guys, I repair boards and can shed a little light that might help. First off the black tape can matter so change it all. What is important is the tape on the back of the plugs the most. It serves a dual purpose of helping with a mechanical connection and anti static. The other black tape may help (back of rear cam, backlight tape, and tape over flash bracket) but prob not. Also the bad battery or heating battery doesn't cause issues, its the heating board. Excess heat causes resistance to any circuit. Another thing to remember is to always disconnect the battery when doing a screen. There is voltage in the plug pins and when your sliding the plug in it could short that voltage to the pins next to it. Turning the phone off before disconnecting the battery shouldn't matter though. Finally what no one wants to hear is that it could be your touch chip on the board. There are 2, one goes bad and causes zebra lines and no touch, the other causes no touch and ghosting. There are also a host of capacitors and a chip and coil that send power to the touch chips. At the end of it all, here's the scoop. If you put the old cracked screen on or another original Apple iPhone screen on and it works again, it's most likely one of 2 things. The first is you got a bad aftermarket screen. Screen refurbing is hard on the lcd and digitizer and getting bad ones happen. The second is how the plugs on the aftermarket screens are. These can be changed and a tell tale sign is no black puffy tape on the back of the connectors. Aftermarket plugs don't fit the same and that tape has a purpose. There is a reason the metal plate screws over those plugs, a mechanical bond is required. So if you have replaced cables with no tape, first clean the plugs on the board (with bat disconnected) with 90% alcohol and a toothbrush. Then plug them in and put the old tape from the other cables on the new screen. If you don't have the old screen, 2 or 3 layers of electrical tape squares at the end of each connector over the metal backs of the plugs will do. Finally if the touch is bad on old screen and new and all the tape is there or it's an original screen, you are looking at a board issue. I'm not sure of too many people that do the stuff I do but odds are if you can find one, they will be on eBay. It is safe to send out to these people only if..... The phone is completely unusable anyway AND if not repaired there is a 100% refund AND <<< (this is a big and) they guarantee to send the phone back the same way it left. This means if it powered up before it better after the repair even if the touch doesn't work. You don't want it to lose value if not repaired. If this isn't in their message then send them a message personally and get them to guarantee those 3 things.. Hope this helps ;)

Solution is easy, this is caused by excess heat in your phone, if the cause of heat is the battery change it. If the cause is the new screen,then put the brightness to minimum.

Problem: Flickering around the edges of the LCD after a screen replacement.

Cause: The problems you guys are having happens with the iPhone 4 and higher are caused by disconnecting the battery without powering down the device (swipe to power off) or not waiting for the full power down before disconnecting the battery.

Solution: The only thing you can do is minimize your flickering by running the device with the screen on for about 20 min. That should cause most if not all the flickering to disappear.

Sometimes you can mishandle the screen and the flickering effects are similar except you will see it in the middle of the screen also. This usually doesn't go away.

You can leave the battery connected technically while doing a screen replacement, but you run the risk of shorting board level components. You should disconnect the battery but only after swipe to power down is completed.

I have been having se issues. Only on the 5 and 5s models. 5c has yet to be a problem. After looking real closely there is a piece of tape on the top left and under the tape there is another layer with like an alluminium layer under that. Transfered all 3 layers over to new screen and seems to be working. It would be right above the rear facing camera. Had to look real close to find it and be super careful transfering it over. The allum is super thin

i've found the solution. I have an iPhone 5s.

Like everyone else having this problem, it all started with a replacement touch screen, aftermarket screens or bad screens seems to have an awful or nonexistent oleophobic coating. In my case seems to have it, but within weeks it just disappears and the iphone start ghosting, so i figured out that must have been a screen issue.

The solution? I just bought a cheap template gorilla oleophobic glass cover, and so far, the ghosting touch has gone.

I had exactly the same problems and i think i found a workable solution:

symptoms: ghost clicks, trouble tapping, somtimes very fast, somtimes touchscreen only unresponsive. It had some bad moments and some good moments too. after all it was ok to use.

i have to tell you i have done multiple repairs (at least 30 iphone 5 screens alone) and this was the first time ever had this problem. I know what im doing with the flex cables, everyting went als normal.

first repair attempt: i checked with another screen, maybe only the digitizer was broken. This second screen was an original iphone screen with broken glass. The results were the same :(

second repair attempt: i did everything i read above (plastic behind backlight, covering the contacts of the backlight. No result.

third repair attempt: i started testing when it went wrong with the digitizer using test flex cables. i started noticing that the ghost click appeared when i was moving the screen (it was not attached in place in the iphone) Then i noticed when i touched the flex cables with my hands the ghost clicks appeared even more. My theory was that if the lcd flex and digitizer flex touched each other, random taps would appear. So i took a piece of paper and put it all the way in between the flex cables. starting at the backlight until the connections on the motherboard. I assembled everything and now the digitizer works perfectly. Only when i press real hard on the corner where the flex connectors are, it can sometimes be unresponsive for a very short moment. Its not perfect yet but i you don't press explicitly on the corner, the digitizer is perfectly normal.

Hope i could help some of you, i had a real hard time finding a solution for this problem, if it works, let me know.

Just try ignore repeat in 'settings>general>accessibility> Touch accommodations>ignore repeat' it will be just fine

I don't know what changed lately, but recently I have the same issue with iPhone 5 screens.

I repaired many iPhone 5 screens but since a couple of weeks i'm seeing this issue more often. I put the iPhone on a charger at sleep and in 90% of the cases the problem disappears after like 30 minutes... Just leave it for a while. Hope this helps for you.

I was used to turn on the phone and test the screen when the iPhone 5 was still open, so I didn't had to open the phone again if (for example) the sensor didn't work. Last couple of weeks I totally install the screen and close the phone before turning it on. Fingers crossed, but so far I didn't had these issues again. I think thats the solution.

Go to the app you started last and complete the action. Shut off iPhone and turn back on if that doesn't work. Wait a few minuets and it should go away. I was trying to send a big email to my friend and the mail kept closing down so I restarted my phone. As I was restarting it, it wouldn't turn on so I touched the power button. DONT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON. Press the home button and the power button at the exact same time and hold until the apple symbol shows up. The rings around the edge are it's turning on and off effect going berserk. Give it a few minuets and it should go away

Hello guys, ive had the same problem with the ghost clicking and flickers after the screen replace because of cracked glass.

Id read all the above and tried pretty much everything, untill i found what it worked out at least for me.

The digitizer and lcd ribbon cables comes, in the original part, with a sort of foam wich isolate each cable one from the next one, this foam it was not provided with the screen i bought for the replacement.

so what i did is pull apart this foam from the original part really carefully with a razor blade and then i stuck it on the new ribbon cable.

Done! problem solved !! i hope it helps as is an anoying failure

I just had the flickering issue (don't know about ghost clicks, I didn't test much).

I fixed it by disassembling it a bit and reassembling. At first I just removed the bracket over the display cable, and reattached it. But it didn't help then.

Second time I also loosened the bracket over the earpiece speaker, adjusted it a bit, fastened the bracket and massaged the ribbon cables around it gently. Then I reattached the ribbon cables and reassembled again, and the display was fine. For now at least. It does seem the light sensor doesn't work, but I haven't tried fixing it yet.

The pink tape that came with the new display, I removed it the first time and never reattached it. I don't think it's supposed to be there.

I did not disconnect the battery.

My friend had an iPhone 5s crap phone imo. It did have a screen replacement. After dropping it in a life proof case it started flickering at the bottom and got progressively worse to where the edge of the viewing screen raised half and inch and touch wasn't responsive. After reading posts i messed with the phone and was able to stop the flickering, get the bottom of the screen back to the bottom of the display, and got touch back. I'm convinced a cable is tweaked or is touching something it should not due to a bent frame as mentioned in one of the above hypothesis'. But i did was just put my thumb 1/3 from the top on the backside and fingers on one side. Using my other hand and the hand with the thumb in on the backside and fingers on one side i bent the phone inward somewhat it seemed to make the shaking go away the more i did it so now the phone seems perfect aside from where it was dropped. Hope this helps, maybe try pressing your thumb into various areas of the backside and apply some pressure to the edges. It didnt work at first but i kept at it a little and it started to help and completely fixed it after.

I have an iPhone 5S and the LCD broke.

I bought a LCD replacement at www.aliexpress.com and after the change I got several ghost click problems.

What do not work to solve:

1) Replace by another screen. I have took the phone to an authorized repair service and they replaced the screen by a genuine one. Same problem.

2) Flat cables isolation and reassembly. The flat cables are well fixed and mounted. Very difficult to get loose.

3) Restore of the iphone OS (this problem is not related to software)

What worked (so far)

1) The back of LCD has a plate. I was wondering if this plate was the problem. So I put a piece of paper to isolate the plate from the battery and the rest of components. Placed the paper behind the screen (paper size is iphone width x 6cm height). That paper that you get when you use the credit card in the small machines.

For me this worked (so far, 2 days without any problem).

i had the same problem with my phone.My screen was unresponsive at times and i could find ghost clicks when i kept holding the same spot while using instagram or fb.I noticed the problem from today morning.I do repairs on my own and tried my best but couldnt figure it out this time.Then i thought about the exact time this happened.It was from the moment i started using a fake iphone/ipad charger which i bought from ebay.That might have messed up with the circuit inside.Also i guess removing the case also helped me.Also if you have a dry screen,you could apply a little bit of vasiline on a microfibre cloth and rub the screen gently with that.And for those guys who said that they got horizontal stripes on the screen,its definitely a problem with the flex cable.Re-installing it may fix the issue.Or try cleaing the flex cable with a brush lightly if it has signs of corrosion(if it was ever water damaged).Hope this helps.

This method that worked for me.

My issue was the Iphone 5s screen glitching especially at the 2 sides of the screen.

** Plug your phone into a power source with the lightning cable

** Turn the screens brightness down to MINIMUM all the way down.

** Wait at least 30 mins for it to recover itself

If this doesn't work, keep the phone plugged in and turn it off and wait another 30 mins.

this has happened to me twice now and these methods had worked for me.

Hello, sorry for my poor english, but i will try to explain how i fix this problem in a IPHONE 5S. The problem in my phone start wen it fall to the ground, then the touch screen start to go crazy. I try a lot of things to solve this problem because it was imposible to use the phone. First i change the battery, the problem still remain, then i replace the screen, but the problem still there. So i realise that the problem was in the board.

The board have some metalic contacts to make discharge or something like that from static or whatever, when you put a screen those contacts must touch the metalic back of the screen, if those contacts are not touching the metal or are dirty this make the touch go crazy, so i clean those contacts and separated enough to make sure ther will be a good contact then, voila!!!! The screen was perfect again.

You just need to put some masking tape in that contact that is in the red circle of this photo (covering that contacts) and now your iPhone is good to go :)

Guys, probably the NON-official LCD is the problem, not the quality of the cables. 100% the cheap screens are the cause of this issue. And also you can see different color depths( brighter etc.)
