As much as I have searched it seems that loose or flappy lid problem has been so far fixed only with certain hacks. This sometimes means breaking the top shell or modifying the body with rubber stoppers. Is there a way to make the lid firmer without breaking the upper shell?

Firstly I would try connecting with your warranty provider.
Unfortunately the only way into the lid to tighten the hinges / replace the hinges with new ones is to "break open the lid" This can be done very conservatively, with no tool marks when done, but requires a little skill.
