Water spill on keyboard, won't power up.

My girlfriend has a macbook pro and she enjoys drinking large glasses of water right next to it. Unfortunately, when she last spilled water on it, something went wrong and the mac will not power up anymore (after flipping it and 5 days drying).

I've taken the logic board out and I've seen almost no trace of water damange (the dust on the board was pretty much intact. I see no copper oxidation (greenish), but there are a few brownish (copper color) spots top left of the power pads where it should be white.

The computer will still not turn on when I press the power button. I tried cmd+alt+p+r, nothing.

The magsafe light turns green when I plug it in and the battery indicator says the battery is full.

When I short the power pads, the computer boots up.

Is there an easy way to find out if the keyboard is dead or if it's the keyboard chip (which will be harder to replace obviously)?

What do you mean short the power pads?

I have the same issue, i opend tha macbook and use dryer , but unfortunately it wont work after 2 dayes ,

With the hard drive in and the power plugged in, I managed to successfully boot the computer and the keyboard still works. I had to short the power pads to boot it up, the power button just doesn't work.

What I need to know is how to test the power button to find out whether it's the actual power switch / keyboard circuit that failed or whatever device that reads the signal from the keyboard?

I have the laptop open up to the keyboard with the power switch unscrewed. I need a smaller phillips screwdriver to remove the keyboard.

Hi i have a similar issue, although i am typing on a usb keyboard, i spilt a tiny bit of tea on the keyboard, immediately turned it off and put it upside down with the display open so tea would drip out. Although my keyboard is shot, its working ok. Although i have now got an even more bigger problem, the wifi and bluetooth say their not installed. Not entirely sure if this is a result of the liquid spill or something more sinister. not entirely sure but this could also be related to trying to install beta versioon of Mac OS SIERRA 10.12.2. But its failed on all restarts to install it and now i have no wifi or bluetooth. using my iPhone usb connection at the moment... any ideas? Cheers and what a useful site. I have also ordered a replacement keyboard for the MacBook from amazon. is this easy to reinstall?

You've made the test - the top case/keyboard is shot. The power button runs through the top case circuitry. The DIY fix would be to replace the complete top case.

Girlfriend should buy a sealed cup with a straw, or step away from the computer to drink liquids.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it accepted.

Same situation - on 2 different macs and this is what I did. Worked flawlessly. Hold down control option and shift on left side of keyboard for 10 seconds - while still pressing them press power button and hold all keys for 10 more seconds. Let them go then hold power button down for 10 seconds. White pole logo pops up with loading bar. And viola! When the Mac gets wet SMC freaks out so you have to reset. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

I have tried that. It did not work at all. What should I do???

Karla Bonilla thank you for saving my life and wallet, what you suggested worked perfectly and got my machine to turn on and work again 🥳

Top case wouldn't need repaired. The keyboard and power button are part of the same assembly. So to replace the power button, you would replace the entire keyboard. I did this repair on a 2010 MBP that kept turning off during the boot up sequence. The person I bought it from figured it was a bad logic board, but I took the gamble, and sure enough, it was the keyboard causing a short or whatever the problem was. New keyboard made it run like new. I noticed a lot of sticky nastiness on the old keyboard after I removed it, so I'm sure that was also caused by liquid damage. The logic board was fine. I think this problem is often overlooked when people report water damage. People are always quick to say logic board, but the keyboard really traps most of the spill it looks like (of course it depends on the part of the device the spill occurred, and just how much liquid got in.

clearly top case doesn't NEED repaired, but its a lot easier than putting in a new keyboard

Hey

I'd like to add my two cents. I managed to spill about a half a glass of water on my Macbook near the air vent and the laptop went off. I was freaking out and tried to turn it on which it did but it again got shut down after a few minutes and then it refused to start. I know I did the biggest mistake but then I googled everywhere what should I be doing. With no hope I just reversed my macbook and kept it as it is air for two days occasionally exposing it to sunlight and miraculously it started working after two days. I am typing from my macbook write now.

In a video that I watched, it said to put a pillow under the MacBook while it is flipped. Would you suggest this? Or would you recommend setting it flipped over on a flat surface?

tarafından

Omg can you tell me how you did it, I just done that right now. I’ve got it on the side like a book atm but I just don’t know what to do

As there has been no definitive answer on this, here it is:

The keyboard has shorted out and needs to be replace. Here's how to do that:

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Keyboard Replacement

Keyboard replacements can be found easily by doing a search on Google or eBay for:

keyboard +MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2010+Keyboard+Replacement

What do you mean by the "top case"? What is the problem exactly? The power button itself? Can't I just change the keyboard?

tarafından

Apparently you haven't looked at the guides - if that's what you want to do. The problem will be in finding just a power button that's good. Most people will want to sell the entire top case as one unit (it's worth more money, and it's and easier strip/replace).

tarafından

I did look at the guide, I removed the keyboard completely too. It's not necessarily only the power button I want, the whole keyboard is like 40$ so that's not too bad. The problem is that I have no idea if the power button is the problem or if there is a problem on the logic board reading the keyboard's output.

It could be a reassembly problem. The keyboard ribbon cable must go completely (deeply) into the ribbon cable connector. A trick that works for me is to use some 3/4" blue painters tape to stick to the very back (lower end) of the ribbon cable so I can pull it up and back before locking the cam. Trying to get a good grip without cutting, or crimping the ribbon means no tweezers or pliers can be used.
