Screen stuck on sleep mode screen
Screen is stuck on page which come up when sleeping and book I was ready when tapping screen doesn't come up. I can not switch the kindle of either ?

Try the following to reset your Kindle Paperwhite.
Press and hold the Power button for seven seconds until the Power dialog box appears, and then tap Restart.
If the Power dialog box doesn't appear, press and hold the Power button for a full 40 seconds until your device restarts.

I held the power button until my finger went numb (several times) still nothing.
Me too !!! What to try next?
If it still doesn't work, you should keep pressing it, let your fingers rest and then, maybe, it'll show the problem. Mine did that and the screen suddenly went white and it warned me that the battery was dead. Sometimes, the battery is the problem. If your battery is dead, you will not be able to restart, nor turn "on" the Kindle.
