Basically, inside the iPod Mini is a microdrive- essentially, it's a harddrive. Lots of people have found that the microdrive is in fact swappable with a compact flash card. Once you get it open, you'll see the harddrive on a small cable. The microdrive should be surrounded by blue rubber bumpers and black adhesive.

I'd look into ordering a compact flash card off eBay. It makes for a faster Mini (less delay in queueing songs), and it is less susceptible to shock damage.

Yep, JoshCalvetti is correct. I'd recommend this guide for more info on the process:

Yep. replaceable with a CF card. I'll be doing this, and a battery upgrade to my dad's old mini (We got him a touch for Christmas). Buying the battery here from iFixit, and an 8GB SanDisk CF card from Newegg, for $33.

Make sure, absolutely sure that the CF card is ATA compatible, otherwise it won't work. I wouldn't go for ebay though, but maybe I'm paranoid.

Can somebody tell me which companys compact flash cards are in general fully ATA compatible and cheap?

Check out www.peakhardware.com, I used their 16GB CF card to upgrade a 2nd gen iPod nano from a 4gb drive.

I would not recommend buying CF cards on eBay. There is a lot of counterfeiting going on.

I would also recommend using this solution(http://geektechnique.org/projectlab/753/...),

I got my daughter a new nano and took her old iPod mini and replaced the battery(from iFixit with kit) and at the same time put in a 16GB CF card, now I wish I had went ahead went to 32 GB. ~:)

None of these links work, any other suggestions?

If you have a second gen Mini, you can do a simple upgrade to 6Gb if you only got 4, this doesn't require any of the tricks that are mentioned above, and is a standard replacement. Here is a link.

But... a CF card is probably cheaper and bigger. And it really doesn't require any tricks to get it to work. If you're going to be opening the iPod anyway, it makes more sense to put a flash card in than to use a medium that has a higher failure rate.

I am trying to replace an iPod Mini 2Gen 4GB microdrive with a 32GB Compact Flash. I read on one site that I need to copy the “iPod Control Files” to my new flash drive. I am assuming that is the ipsw file.

My Compact Flash drive is formatted as one partition FAT32.

Do I need to just copy the ipsw file to the partition and then install the CF drive into the ipod or do I have to do something special like format it into two partitions?

Can someone please let me know how to get the new CF drive working in my iPod Mini?

I tried connecting the old microdrive to the computer but my CF reader just gives me an error when I try to connect it to my computer so I cannot just copy the microdrive contents to the CF drive.

Thank you for your help.

I'm having a similar issue with my iPod mini. I bought and installed a new battery and 32 GB card, but now I'm getting an error message with a file picture on it.

I was able to charge it, connect it to iTunes and upload songs to it, but after unplugging it I get the error message.

I tried to restore the iPod through iTunes, but I get an error 1432 message saying it could not be restored.

I've since taken the iPod apart again, but everything seems to be in the right place.

Could this be a battery problem?
