Battery not charging after logic board install

Powerbook G4 17" 1.33

Apple PowerBook G4 1.33 17" (Al) Specs

Identifiers: 17-Inch 1.33/1.5 - M9110LL/A - PowerBook5,3 - A1052

I took a bit of a gamble on an ebay logic board for my powerbook 17" 1.33 laptop. All installed well or so I thought - now the battery wont charge, it doesn't drop it's charge either providing it's plugged in with the mains adapter. Here's what I've tried;

  • reseting the PMU
  • a different battery (also running coconutbattery app)
  • quick Apple hardware test - everything passed

Here's my thoughts (I'd welcome yours);

Prior to the install I was confused by the thermal paste areas, I couldn't get a clear answer from my post (posted here and elsewhere earlier) so I ended up cleaning and applying arctic silver paste to the cpu, the power management unit and the gpu.

I wonder if the application of paste to the PMU was appropriate? It could be a bad connection - I'll open it up later and check the cables are properly seated.

It's definately not the adaptor or the batteries - I have two of both which I have tried and I know they are fine.

Comments appreciated

Thanks

ps; could be nothing but I'm noticing more static than before around the trackpad /speakers area.

I opened it up again and checked the connections, couldn't see anything obvious. Spoke to an apple technician earlier today who agreed it could be the PMU. System profiler reports the correct wattage on the adapters (65). Can I definitely rule out the DC-in board?

It would be great to get some feedback on this as I'm working on this laptop while on holiday and I've noticed it's getting hot. If the paste was incorrectly applied it would be good to know...

I don't see a post where you asked this question here. Only one about a LaCie drive. When you say you put paste on the power management unit, are you talking about the DC-IN board? I've changed your device to the one I believe you have (if you give us the last three letters of your serial number it will pinpoint exactly which machine you have). Did you follow any guide before applying this paste?

Thanks Mayer, here's a picture of the logic board; http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/3964/... on the lower left you can see the Motorola cpu, then to the right the black square approx 1.5" is what I thought was the power management unit - it still has some white thermal residue from the original install. To the right of this are 4 squares with a diamond shape in the middle which I took as the GPU. I cleaned (with Articlean/purifer) all of these components as well as the heatsinks (the raised elements on the lower casing) I then applied a thin layer if AS5 to the CPU, PMU and GPU. The serial number for this machine is V73376BUP22. My mistake on the previous post, it was on apple discussions. Thanks.

Here's a photo of the logic board as it should be: [bağlı ürün eksik veya kapalı: IF155-044]

Is the image you posted your logic board? Have you applied the thermal paste to the top of the components? Do you understand what thermal paste is meant to do? (Transfer heat between two components), If not please read the following: How to Apply Thermal Paste

The image I posted was taken from ebay, before I cleaned it up, I identified the board via it's part number. I understand what thermal paste is supposed to do. I applied the paste to the top of the components, although I've just looked at apple's technical manual for this machine which shows a thermal gel and foam being used on the heatsink.

...by the way my previous post was here http://www.ifixit.com/Discuss/thread/311...

not sure why this isn't shown in my posts.

What i"m trying to determine is if you've applied the thermal paste "between" the parts or put it on top of the parts.
