Phone has no signal (SIM card works)

Hey all,

The Nexus 5 no longer gets a signal with the SIM card in. Tried the SIM in another phone, and it works fine. The IMEI is recognized on the phone, so I think it's a hardware issue. Is there a part I could replace to fix this? I'd prefer to keep this phone instead of ordering a new one.

Thanks!

edit: I should add, WiFi works fine, and it even says "No signal.|CITYFONE" in the pull down menu.

Hi,

Check in Settings > Wireless and networks > More > Network operators > Select Manually to see if it can detect other carriers. If so then the signal detect circuits seem to be working.

Have you tried another known working compatible network SIM card in your phone to see if it works, just to doubly prove that it is the phone that is the problem?

Tried using my wife's SIM in it, and it seemed like it had signal for a minute or so before reverting back to no signal. It's possible now that it isnt recognizing SIMs at all. Before it was, though, the Network Operators menu was populated with a few choices. Choosing any of them did would not connect the phone.

Thanks!

Hi @dhenry4 ,

Seems as though the SIM card reader may be faulty.

The other carriers might have showed up because they operate on the same frequencies as your phone supports. However your carrier's SIM card and the fact that the phone may be 'locked' to Cityfone would have prevented you from connecting to them. As I said it was only to prove that the signal detect circuits were working and that the fault lay elsewhere i.e. the SIM card reader.

Also I would hesitate to use the solution as described in the answer above. Allowing any liquid to come into contact with electronics is just asking for trouble

Hi,

A loose antenna cable may be the problem. Try writing to the SIM card i.e move Contacts to SIM card etc, that will tell you if you can read / write OK to the card.

Here is a link to the Ifixit guide repair to your phone. In Step 8 you can see the antenna cable.

Yes, I'm fairly sure that other user is a troll.

The phone is unlocked, and I bought it separately from Cityfone, so it shouldn't be that.

Bit of a shame if it is the SIM card reader, because that fix is about the cost of the phone.

Is there any chance it could be the antenna? Thanks!

Just some quick responses to some statements.

1) olive oil IS non-conductive, however, you would need it in its purest state. i would suggest using 99% isopropyl, as it costs less, as well as it dilutes minerals and evaporates quicker than oil. I use isopropyl to clean dust from every phone i open at my shop.

2) Nexus phones from google were manufactured unlocked. the nexus series phone does not lock to carriers.

other than these, good answer.

My Oneplus 2 reads the Sim but no signal. I've tried everything possible from *#*#4636#*#* to turning it off numerous times. It says no service but emergency calls only.
