Trying to fix this DVD player - the owner said it doesn't read discs. On investigating I found that it wasn't spinning discs at all. I've replaced the laser/motor unit but it's still the same. The disc starts moving 2 or 3 times very slowly but then it gives up and says no disc. Both laser/motor units do exactly the same.

Thanks for this...I hadn't already got it. I will play around with the service menus and see if I can get it to do anything and report back

Just a quick thought.
Are the lasers turning on? Watch your eyes!!
Disc starting to move indicates perhaps that it is looking for the file "start" location on the disc but if it cannot "see" it or any other data because the laser is not being switched on, it stops.
They say this one provides them with some clues.
