Brake light stays on

Brake light stays on in my Volkswagen Golf. The brake fluid is full and the lever is in the correct position. I did manage to turn it off once, but it came right back on.

Hi I have a similar problem, mine came on I topped it up but only when the brakes went a spongy, now the light has gone out, but the brakes are still spongy? They still work but I'm sure my foot has to go down harder on the brake now?? Any advice would be great!

do you mean the "low brake fluid warning light" or the lights at the back of your car?

"low brake fluid warning light": can also be caused by worn out brake pads, or some cable which is connected to the lever in the brake fluid tank is lose or lost its connection to the lever and/ or its mechanism. --> check the cables and their connectors which route to the lever in the brake fluid tank, check the brake pads front and rear.

lights at the back of your car: switch at the brake pedal gone bad, or water and/ or corrosion in the back lights which causes contact between negative and the positive pole of the brake lights. --> check the switch at the pedal (maybe a new one isn´t that expensive), check the rear lights for water and corrosion

There should be a switch that the brake pedal activates when pushed in that switch is most likely going bad should be an easy fix

Two possibilities: Handbrake switch (if the panel light is lit) or the switch in the pedal (if the brake lights in the back of the car are lit). In some cars, there are a brake fluid "sensor" in the cap of the brake fluid tank...

Pero la pregunta se trataba sobre que el Golf, se quedaba con la luces de freno (las exteriores, no que hubiese una luz encendida en el tablero), y no se apagaban, aunque retirase la llave de encendido.

The two normal causes for the brake light in the dash to come on (on most vehicles) are low brake fluid or a faulty parking brake switch.

If it's a low fluid situation, topping off the fluid generally alleviates the situation but points to one of two things. Either the pads/shoes are thin and need of replacing or there's a leak in the system.

Leaks can occur in the seals of the pistons and aren't noticeable unless you pull the wheels off and inspect the calipers.

If the parking brake switch is faulty, then it may be something as simple as something having gotten stuck between the lever and switch, depressing the switch. Something more complicated is the switch wire being shorted to ground somewhere as a ground signal is what activates the light in the dash.

What you're describing leads me to believe it's a leak or very worn out pads. Have a free brake check done at any local shop and go from there.

Can also be caused by 2 or more abs sensors being bad.
