Reboot and select proper boot device

I have been putting off this last update, every time it updates I have to go and Change something back. But it was getting obnoxious reminding me 5 times a day. So I clicked it.

It showed "do not turn off or unplug installing updates".

The next morning I went to the computer and on the screen was, " do not turn off or unplug installing updates". It was frozen. No keys worked and I couldn't turn it off, non removable battery so I unplugged it letting the battery go dead.

Now when I power it up, it's a black screen with,

Reboot and select proper boot device.

It's an ASUS X55, all stock. This is what I have done so far.

Restarted, hit f2 went to bios and made sure everything was right.

Did troubleshooting, nothing worked.

Held down Ctrl+fn+home then the power switch. Nothing.

Held the ESC key and powered it up. Nothing.

Opened it up and replaced the button battery. Nothing.

Removed the HDD and froze it. Nothing.

Removed the HDD and tapped it on the counter top.

Still nothing.

I did make recovery discs, but that was over a year ago and they are gone now. I have no other computer, I do have a smartphone. Can I download Asus recovery to my phone and connect it via a micro USB to USB cord?

Hi @manurehappens ,

Do you know anyone with a Win 10 computer?

If so you can create a Recovery USB from their computer.

Go to Control panel > Recovery.

It takes about 40 minutes and needs a 4GB (8GB to be safe) USB flashdrive.

You say that you can get into BIOS, so when you have the recovery USB change boot order in your laptop to USB 1st (you may also have to enable Legacy boot or CSM - however it is listed in BIOS to get it to boot.

Once in Recovery, select Troubleshooting > Advanced.

DO NOT select reset my pc as this will reinstall Win 10 and erase all your data. Use repair startup option.

Hi,

Just noticed that you had Win 8 installed

You can create a USB recovery drive from a Win 8 computer as well.

Don't think that a Win 10 recovery drive will work for a Win 8 though
