Screen shows lines after drop

Hello,

The computer wont start after being dropped. After trying to power-cycle and doing a ec reset it booted but shows lines on the screen and freezing up at boot.

I do understand that something is broken here but if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Hi,

Connect an external monitor to the laptop and check what its' display is like.

If it also has lines then there is a problem with the GPU or the motherboard or both.

If the external monitor display is OK then there is a problem with either the video cable, video cable connections at either end, (motherboard or screen) or the screen itself.

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop. On p.37 it details the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the display panel.

This will help if you need to check the video cable connections or if you have determined that the screen is faulty.

Depending on what particular display you have, you will find part numbers either on p.40 or at the top of p.37 for the screens. Your display's part number may be printed somewhere on the back of the display panel. You'll have to remove it to find out if it is ;-)

If you search online using the part number only in the browser search box, you will get results for suppliers of the part.

Mine is doing this also. It may happen within a few minutes of login or I can be on it for hours before it happens as long as I keep it level. I'll try the external monitor, but since I can never recall it being dropped nor mishandled, I have another suspicion. My original cable had a three pronged plug. The replacement does not. I can only charge with this cable. Operating with the new two pronged cable results in an unstable mouse pad. So, I only operate it on battery power. ANY FEEDBACK on this theory.

@kevinonions

Three pronged plug into what, the laptop or the power outlet?

If into the power outlet this could mean that the cable has no through earth connection which shouldn't really affect the charger's operation.

If you can't run the laptop (and charge the battery at the same time) using the charger check the charger's output voltage is OK.

Try another compatible charger if possible and check what happens.

What is the model number of the laptop?
