Data Recovery - Challenging Case

In a lapse of judgment I attempted to replace my wife's iPhone 6s screen and something went wrong and on power up to test the screen I could smell that something fried.

After than all I could get the phone to do is charge and connect to itunes (never been backed up , never trusted)

I took the device to a reputable recovery and repair company in Houston who had the device for 8 months and there was no success, they replaced many components and could never get the screen to be recognized by the device. No way to enter the pass-code or trust.

I also had them try using a USB keyboard and a set of key strokes using a specific set of adapters to allow power to both. I had previously tried every recovery software I could get my hands on but could never get past the Trust issue.

I had the device sent to Drive Savers who said the device would not power on or connect to itunes and send it back. So now I am worse off than before I have a device that will not power on on top of what was described above.

I can beat you to the punch, yes its ridiculous to have never backed it up, especially before working on it. That is however passed and I cannot go back. The pictures and videos on the device are priceless to my wife and I am reaching out hoping to find a way to recover the data. I saw discussion here of people doing board swaps and things i had not heard of prior. I don't need the phone to function beyond the ability to remove the data and I am pretty desperate, this is a major strain on my marriage when coupled with an already strained relationship. I want to give her this history back.

Is there a way to recover the data if the main board is not operable or reparable? I've scoured the internet for the best of the best in iPhone recovery and repair and its been a lost cause. My only hope is finding someone willing to try that understands the challenge. Is there anybody out there that does advanced recovery like this?

Wow...this is quite an unfortunate turn of events.

I would say that the initial problem seemed like it was only a blown backlight circuit...a pretty typical failure with DIY screen repairs. The issue stems from not disconnecting the battery prior to removing or reconnecting the screen. You may have been unlucky in that the damage was more severe than usual.

What's concerning is the rest of the story. Multiple repair attempts significantly reduce the odds of data recovery, especially when multiple components have been removed/replaced. The number of variables has grown exponentially and will make troubleshooting even harder. If you have detailed accounts of what was tried by the various shops, this would help in understanding what went wrong along the way.

The last gasp method is to remove the CPU, NAND, BB & EEPROM and transplant them to a working device. However, this is an extremely difficult repair and the success rates are usually quite low as a lot can go wrong with a CPU transplant (the other IC's are pretty straightforward). Anyone who says it's easy should be regarded with skepticism. That's not to say that some techs can't do it successfully, it's just that it's a little misleading to claim a "sure-thing". Your best bet is to have a fresh outlook into a partial repair (get past the passcode & trust) and then consider the CPU/NAND transplant as a last recourse.

At this point, you are at "two strikes"...you may only have one more shot at this so consider carefully. I would avoid shops that specialize in hard disk repair as phones are not their specialty. Stateside, you should look into iPad Rehab, Jessa & Mark are among the best. You can also look at my profile for more info.

Minho—thanks for sending Scott our way. I’m sure you also could have recovered his phone, you just never know with the prior repair attempts. Shameful. but not terribly surprising for Drivesavers to have missed such a straightforward problem, especially with a price quote of nearly 2k. We recovered it on livestream tonight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3niTZ_P...
