Cannot choose camera mode

My camera is fairly old (11 yrs) and it has been well used. I recently pulled it out to play with and noticed that the dial on top that allows you to choose the camera settings is not working and neither is my shutter speed indicator - when I spin the wheel it does not adjust no matter what light I am in.

Anyone know whats up?
