No display on LCD but external monitor works fine

Hi,

So my MacBook’s screen didn’t work one day so I connected it through HDMI to an external screen and it shows up fine, everything else with the laptop works fine too.

I have reset the PRAM and SMC but still nothing on the display.

I have attached pics of the lcd connector on the board as well as the LCD cable.

I also saw that a capacitor next to the lcd connector has a dark edge so would that be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you have two problems! The cable has lost one of its pins (top) and your cap is looking a bit worn at the solder joint.

I would start off replacing the display cable. Its a bit of work! You’ll need to take the display off following this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Display Assembly Replacement. ones off you can slide off the clutch cover and carefully reach in to disconnect the cable from the LDC panel.

Thanks for your quick reply! I have already stripped down my MacBook before so replacing the cable is easy, as for the capacitor will re-soldering the joints work?

How would the cable lose a pin? And would the socket on the board have the missing pin inside it?

I will try your solution and post the results. Thanks again

I really think you need to focus on the connector first.

The cap likely will need replacing if you try to re-solder it as the contact surfaces have degraded to the point any soldering will likely fail to adhere to the part.

Forcing the cable into the connector at an angle, it's just very delicate! Use a magnifier to see if you can spy the remains in side the connector. Its possible the pins inside are also damaged by the loose piece.

So I ordered a new screen cable and fitted it, still no picture :(

just a quick question, is the screen working but the backlight is off/broken? using the external display make sure you have mirroring on so the same image will be on both displays. then take a light and shine it onto your macs screen... if the screen is not working at all then it will stay black, if its just a backlight issue, you should be able to make out portions of the screen image depending on the angle you get your light at...

just trying to help you get a more precise symptom list for the gurus on here

@xshawk - Luke stated it was:
