Has anyone ever tried this with a heat gun or anything else like chemicals such as acetone or something like that??? Is BB-8 Glued??? Or Sonically Welded??? I’m looking for a method for replacing the battery that’s not extremely destructive, anyone have any other ideas for splitting the shell??? Has anyone ever tried to cut the shells apart with a tiny thin razor blade??? A dremel is too destructive and removes too much of the shell to be able to put it back together again because it is missing a few mm of the shells.

The plastic is glued. This man uses a woodpecker tap technique for hours and it seems to work, here's the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeHQjG4h...

Hello! Is the hammer method really effective? I got 3 bb8 balls that has gone bad. I want to replace their batteries to add more years to their lives

Hi @icmho ,

Here’s a link to a video that shows how to dis-assemble the droid to access the battery.

The opening method in the video may be a bit too destructive ;-)

The batteries are seen being removed at about 3:50 minutes into the video.

The problem is putting it back together after you cut it. How can you put it back?

@Seumas Rawlinson That was the method I used... I did run into some issues, a crack developed. I am at the replace-battery step now, I was hoping to find more info here. I have viewed the Star Wars guy with Dremel Saw video, too destructive. I documented some of my steps HERE:

It doesn’t take hours. I did mine in about 10 minutes. Don’t use a hacksaw. Too rough.

Have you tried this "woodpecker" technique with a BB8? The guy in the video (god bless his soul!) works on other Sphero robots, but not in our particular toy. It would be great to have confirmation that the "soft" hammer method actually works on the droid. Cheers!

Can confirm: tapping the BB-8 all the way around with a hammer coated in polymorph WILL break through the shell. It's going crack through the seam, so when you put it back together, you won't see anything. It's the least destructive method. I have replaced the batteries for one BB-8, and I'm waiting for a replacement head and batteries for a second BB-8. I'll be using this method for that one's repairs. I'll also be ordering BB-9E and if need be, I'll do the repair on that one. If I can remember, I'll record the repair and post to here.

Hi, where did you purchase the batterys. And the soft hammer method works on the disney star wars droid ? Bought mine on line and the battery only lasts less then a min, i really dont want to send it back.

@STUD BULL I found them on Amazon, the link is here, in this discussion. Ya, mine was in the same shape as yours. I got the shell open, and I discovered one "FatBattery", that is the battery that has gone bad. I need a more succinct tutorial on replacing the batteries. I have seen a few videos, but I'd like to find an iFixit style step by step tutorial with images, so I can print it up.

I also can now confirm that the sphere can be cracked open without substantial damage using a hammer coated in polymorph. I had to use a tack hammer after unsuccessfully trying to crack it open with a rubber mallet. Droid is now back working again but it was overall quite a project to replace the batteries in this sucker. Not 100% sure it was worth the effort but in my case I did it to prove that it could be done.
