Replacement for the power ribbon cable in Sony Vaio laptop

Hi,

I have Sony Vaio svf13n12SGS. I want to replace the power cable. However, I could not find same cable with exactly same numbers. This is what I found : 8pin AWM 20624 80c 60v VW-1 15cm, while, the original cable is: Kotel E220709 8pin AWM 20798 80c 60v VW-1 15cm. Please check the attached photos.

Can I use this cable (the new one) or it must be exactly like the original one?

Hi @jayeff

Thank you very much for your help. This is first time I do this type of work and I don't have any experience. All what I need is determining the right cable. Then I will find a way to replace the cable.

Could you please check the attached photo, it shows the width of the original cable.

Thank you for your reply. The pitch in the original cable is it 0.5mm or 1.0mm?

Hi @shdotcom ,

I don’t know the answer but I’m thinking that the designers of the laptop choose that particular cable because of its’ specifications, for a reason, especially as it is as you say a power cable.

Looking at the specifications for the 2 cables that you mentioned, the original 20798 has a slightly thicker wire gauge than the other cable which means that it has slightly less cable losses. It may be negligible as it is AWG 40 and the other is AWG 42 but in low voltage / high current (for a laptop) situations it may be important. The conductors are also slightly further apart which may have an impact on reducing interference between conductors. I don’t know if this is relevant for where it is.

20624

20798

As you couldn’t find an exact replacement, one option to consider is getting a 9 pin 20798 - example only and use a sharp knife or a razor blade to cut off an outside wire at each end so that the cable fits into the connectors at each end. If you decide to do this be sure to cut off the same wire at each end and only enough so that the cable fits snugly into the connector. I realize that my example is too long at 155mm instead of 150mm but hopefully this will not cause a problem.

It seems that some suppliers - example only regard the 20624 and the 20798 as being the same so perhaps the 20624 may be OK. If you have one already try it and see if it causes any performance problems or not.

Hi @shdotcom ,

I have no idea.

The specifications do not specify the pitch requirements

The pitch is the distance between the centre of one conductor to the centre of an adjacent conductor (see diagram in "suppliers - example only" link).

Also in the link it states that an 8 pin cable has a width of 4.5 mm (having a pitch of 0.5mm) so I suppose you could measure the original and if it is wider than 4.5mm then it is reasonable to assume that the pitch may be 1.0 mm

Hi @shdotcom ,

If you could only get a cable that was a lot wider with more wires then this may be the way to go but for me, if the 9 pin cable fits OK in the path it takes between the 2 connectors and doesn't impede or impinge on anything then just cutting out a corner so to speak so that 8 wires go into the connector but the rest of the cable is intact is an easier and safer way to do it as you may not be accidentally damaging the cable as you strip the extra wire out and then separating the cable to get the correct size. You are also maintaining the insulation distance between the edge of the cable and the nearest conductor on both sides.

Also when you get to my age my hands aren't as steady as they used to be ;-)

Hi @shdotcom,

Looking at the picture the cable is 4.5mm wide which matches what the specifications say for a 0.5 mm pitch as shown the suppliers - example only link.

If the pitch was 1.0 mm there would be a minimum of 7.00 mm between the wires plus the distance from the edge to the wire on each side
