iPhone SE will not charge/is not recognized by PC

Hello.

My iPhone SE was charging and was being recognized by my PC until last night. Now, it will not charge and when I plug it in to my Windows 10 PC, I get a notification saying that the USB device has malfunctioned.

I do not have official charging adapters or Lightning cables, but I have tried two AmazonBasics charging adapters, multiple outlets, and multiple USB ports. The device continues to not charge and to not be recognized by Windows.

I don’t have any data on the device, so I don’t care about losing data. Also, I only have one Lightning cable, so I can’t try to charge the device with another Lightning cable.

I looked through multiple questions on the Answer Forum and responses talking about a U2 connector. Does it seem likely that a faulty U2 connector is my problem or could it be something else?

If it helps, I’ve been keeping my iPhone plugged into USB 3.0 ports on my PC a lot lately and about two days ago, my iPhone got atrociously hot while it was plugged into one of them.

Thanks.

Edit: So it’ll actually charge until its powered on. Once the iPhone is done booting, the charging stops.

Edit 2: I got the device off of Swappa, so I don’t know if it has any history of repairs, but going by the answer to this question, I think that by using the USB port on my ThinkPad, I damaged the charge circuit on the logic board: My iPhone won't charge unless turned off

Yes, a different behavior in charging when phone is on or off points to a faulty charging circuit and a Tristar replacement is most probably needed (no U2 IC exists on the iPhone SE).

The overheating you experienced is also a hardware fault indication that’s due to a short to ground. I’m quite hesitant to recommend fixing the iPhone given the present SE market value..unless you have a 32GB and up version the repair cost would be close to a second hand phone. It’ll be good for the environment to avoid another device going into landfill but close to neutral to your pockets..ultimate decision is of course yours.

Hi @beefstewart

Check for dust or dirt in the charging port. This can keep the cable from making a good connection with the phone. Any history of water damage can also corrode the pins inside, making a good connection impossible. If you suspect either of these issues, it might be worth trying a replacement charging port to fix this problem.

If the charging port doesn’t fix your problem, it will most likely be a problem with the U2 charging IC.
