Inconsistent display issues on early 2013 MBP
Hi all,
I have an early 2013 retina Macbook Pro that's stumped three rounds of apple geniuses.
Symptoms:
No display 75% of the time. I can hear the start chime, but no screen or back light. Occasionally I'll get the login page, but the screen will go black as it loads after login.
I can consistently get to the diagnostics by holding command D at startup. Standard and extended diagnostics run and come back clean.
Every other combination of pressing keys at startup does nothing. The screen never comes on. I did manage to get the apple logo and halfway through the loading bar once while pressing command R, then the screen went black. Three subsequent tries gave me nothing.
The third genius suggested it might be the logic board, but said he was guessing because nothing was showing on the diagnostics. He also said that the fact that the diagnostics come up consistently would indicate a software issue, but he didn't know how to wipe and reinstall without a display.
Any ideas?

What does the external monitor show? That would help isolate out which way you need to go.

Upon testing... I got it to turn on and mirror to an external monitor. Then I restarted, screen didn't come on, no mirroring. Third try, got to the login, no mirror. Logged in, screen cut out halfway through loading the user. Two more tries, startup chime but no screen.
I'm not sure whether mirroring should show on the user login screen or not. If I can get it to start up properly again I'll remove user login and test with an external monitor again.
