Can someone confirm, the fan is much louder after upgrading the CPU

Can someone confirm, that the fan is much louder after upgrading the 2017 5k 27” i5/3.4GHz to a i7/4.2GHz (with i7 7700K)?

I nearly never heard the fan before, but now when using the full power of the processor (e.g. rendering in blender with 8 threads at 100%) the fan is very loud.

I’m not sure if this is ok or if I did something wrong with the termal paste application or when installing the cooling system.

Sounds like you have a problem ;-{

How about installing a good thermal & fan monitoring app to see if it can help you focus down to the problem.

I like this one! TG Pro. Post a screenshot of the main window (You'll need to adjust the size so all of the sensors are visible in one image as well as the fans) Adding images to an existing question

The Cores go up to 95°C, and the fan is at nearly 2700 rpm, but some other posts let me beleave that this is normal behavior if all cores are working at 100%.

The fan is not hearable under normal conditions or if just a single core is used.

I did some more tests with Geekbench, Blender Benchmark and everything seems to be ok. I beleave the i7 7700K at 4.2 GHz does need much more cooling then the i5 at 3.4GHz.

The only tool that currently does not run ist the Intel Power Gadget, that could show the GHz of the Processor. Hopefully there will be a new version soon.

It's normal for the fan to ramp up when you're going for an all core boost. If you are worried for the CPU temperature, you can use Macs Fan Control, to manually control the Fan Speed.

OK, thank you!

So, it seems to be normal, I also checked the temperature and speed with Intel Power Log 3.7,

it seems that 4.2GHz is only available for a few seconds, the processor is throttled down to approximately 4.0 GHz when running all cores at 100%. Temperature is about 96°C, Fan Speed about 2700 rpm, what is the maximum speed.

So I think when upgrading a iMac 5K 2017, the 4.0 GHz i7 will be enough because the cooling system is not good enough to handle the i7 7700K at 4.2 GHz for more than a few seconds.

Yeah same here, after upgrading from 3.8 i5 to 4.2 i7 7700k fan is definitely more noticeable and every so often it will ramp up what’s quite annoying
