Horizontal lines appear on screen, after heating up.

Hello,

Lately, my MBP has started showing horizontal lines at the bottom on the screen. These lines don’t appear during a cold start. They start appearing if I run a CPU intensive task and the laptop starts heating up. Once I shut down and let the laptop temperature drop the lines disappear. If I continue working, as the laptop temperature rises the lines increase as well.

Cold start: No problem

Within 30 mins: Lines start to appear

Another 30 mins: They get intense and start spreading upwards

The display is perfect when I connect to an external monitor. So the GPU seems ok.

I had this issue last year as well for a couple of months, one day it magically disappeared. It has now reappeared, a couple of days back.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sadly you have a known issue with the newer 15” models as well as the 13” Fn system as both have undersized cooling for the system so the T-CON board which is sandwiched between the cooling fins and the heat sink over heats! This degrades it.

At this point you need a new display assembly! MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly and here’s the guide to put it in MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2017 Screen Replacement

As to how to prevent killing your new display, you’ll need to get a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro as you want to push the fans harder when you are running something that requires more CPU or GPU load.

You also want to make sure your fans are not choked up with dust as well as the system as a whole. And make sure you are not blocking the vents or place your system down on a surface which has loose fibers which will clog up your fin areas of the cooling system.

Thanks for the prompt reply @danj. Is it possible to replace the T-CON board if as you say, that is the affected component?

I wish that was possible, sadly its not. The cables are soldered onto it and its just not an available part (new).
