Replaced thermal paste and now temps are way too high.

I thought I would replace my thermal paste because it’s been 8 years and this laptop has not received any internal maintenance. I replaced the thermal paste, applied it evenly with an applicator, evenly screwed down the heatsink and pipe, and now im stuck thermal throttling when the computer boots, and the fan is going at full speed. I do not have the backplate on, but I don’t know why that would make a difference. I am panicking a bit now because I need this laptop to work for school tomorrow.

Yeah, it does look like the left side of the die was rather uncovered. I’ll add more paste there and get back when I’m finished.

@bone apple tea - On the contrary! You have too much paste. Its oozed under the guard so your CPU SMT devices are covered! You'll need to lift the guard off hopefully with out breaking it. Use a soft tooth brush with isopropyl alcohol and very carefully clean off all of the paste. I personally find a fillable spray can holding isopropyl alcohol will do a better job as it can dig out the paste thats under the components.
