Kenmore is a popular appliance brand commonly sold by Sears, but Sears does not manufacture any of the appliances themselves. Instead, they source that out and have other manufacturers make their appliances for them. Kenmore refrigerators are made by a variety of different manufacturers including LG, Electrolux, GE, and Whirlpool.

Why is my Kenmore elite model 795.73165.610 not cooling?

I have searched and it looks like this model is not under the class action lawsuit for a bad compressor. I have only had this for 4 years. Is it worth the money to fix it? I paid over $1700.00 for it 4 years ago.

Hi @schneid403,

We are currently in the EXACT same situation as you! Same Kenmore model and issue as well. Ours did not even make it 3 years before the compressor crapped out on us. Had a local repairman come see and he immediately warned me upon seeing the type of fridge that it would not be good news.

He quoted a full replacement of compressor to be 1300, or just refilling freon for 450 but that option is a gamble. Could help for a week, could help for a month.

We found a different fridge (GE Cafe series) we want, but in the current market we could not receive it for another 2 months. So I am currently considering trying to recharge the fridge myself.

Just curious, how did your situation turn out?

As of today mine is doing exactly the same thing. Model 796-73165.610 and I have had it about 4-5 years. Planned obsolescence? Disgusting when you pay what you pay and can't even get 10 years out of the appliance. I called Sears and they are coming out on Wednesday July 20th to assess and advise. I am dead sure it is the compressor and the hard part is they charge you a service call fee to come out and assess it which I usually get waived when the repair guys shows up. But if they are reluctant to work on this because of the class action or the known issue, then what is the solution? Dropping over another $1000 plus on a new refrigerator is not an option right now. I may just bring my old Maytag back into the house from the garage for now that is older and still running. My experience with the Kenmore Elite line has been very disappointing. Between my stove, dishwasher and now this refrigerator all within 5 years having some sort of issue. They used to be high end but the breakdown is too soon. My dishwasher has required new parts because old ones broke or failed. %#*@ shame, got to wonder why home warranty companies make a fortune on this. They know the score. Once again getting milked due to poor quality.

Hi @rivencali

Maybe not planned obsolescence, just a bad compressor design/manufacture perhaps

Check if the compressor is an LG brand.

There was a class action lawsuit regarding LG linear compressors in LG as well as Sears/Kenmore refrigerators.

Unfortunately for you if your model was affected, the deadline to make a claim has passed

I submitted my model info to a law firm that intends to litigate a suit against specific manufacturers that have produced refrigerators that had dud parts that did not last. If interested, check out Top Class Action website. Unfortunately I did not save my prove of purchase so I don't know of I will qualify, but this company shod be held responsible for producing and selling such an inferior product.

Exact problem we have now. No warranty and no help from Kenmore at all. We spent $2400 four years and 11 days ago today. Big manufacturers like Kenmore/Whirlpool just don't care any more. Will do research for better support and warranties before we fork out that much money again!

I have the same model as the original poster. The refrigerator was built 4/2018. We bought it 10/2018. The compressor died two weeks ago. We are being told it costs more for a new compressor than it does to buy a new fridge.

Hi @schneid403 ,

It is always worth fixing

If it is the compressor or the sealed system then with your model it may not be that expensive as according to the warranty as shown on p.3 of the user manual it seems that the compressor has a 10 year warranty and the sealed system 5 years but after the first year you pay for the labour and not the parts, so better than nothing but it has to be found out first what the problem is, so more information is needed to help you.

What is not cooling, the freezer compartment, the refrigerator compartment or both?

Is the compressor motor operating?

If the compressor is operating, can you hear if the evaporator fan inside the freezer compartment at the back of the compartment behind a panel is operating?

It will run as long as the compressor is running and stop when a door is opened (either door) and start again when the door is shut. If it is a quiet fan place your ear next to the fridge cabinet and listen for it to stop when you open a door and start again when you close it.

Do not confuse this fan with the condenser fan which is outside and under the compartments near the compressor unit as it can run whether the compressor is operating or not and if the doors are open or not.

Does the inside of the freezer compartment at the back, feel cold to the touch?

Your responses will determine what to check next as at the moment it could be anything.

We have called Kenmore and they said it sounds like the compressor. Our freezer went first and they said soon the fridge will go because they are all on one compressor. Week 2 of no refrigerator and 2 more weeks until Sears will come look at it. Every repair person we call once they know the model number they won’t work on it due to the LG compressor.

Hi @schneid403

I'm not one to argue with professional repairers but it seems strange that if there is only one compressor and the freezer is not cold then the refrigerator should also not be cold enough either because the only evaporator unit for the refrigerator is in the freezer compartment.

It generates the cold to both compartments and the evaporator fan distributes it by dragging the air over the freezing cold evap unit and blowing it throughout both compartments, cooling them down to the set temps.

The compressor pumps the refrigerant through the evap unit.

If the compressor was faulty then the refrigerator would not be cold either.

What is the actual temps in both compartments? If possible use a thermometer and not rely on any display from the refrigerator just in case.

It may be that the freezer is cold just not cold enough and the refrigerator which operates at warmer temps than the freezer is holding OK because of this. e.g. fridge set temp is usually approx. 37-38 deg. F (3 deg C) and freezer is 0 deg. F (-18 deg C) but if freezer was 20 deg. F (-6 deg. C) then fridge might still be at 38 deg. F if you get what I mean.

This could be due to a refrigerant leak or some other problem in the sealed system and not a faulty compressor.

Any good solution for this problem ?

@Ahmad Shah same fridge? Identical issues? You tried what was given in the answer? What have you checked?
