Where to start? Ryobi LSD120

I have a very old compact drill that has served me very well. But it’s died. I would like to fix it. I have recharged both batteries and swapped them out: nothing. It was working ok then just stopped - no sign of anything going wrong beforehand. Where do I start with identifying what’s wrong? Any suggestions as to most likely causes of the problem?

Used carbon brushes, corroded battery terminal or faulty trigger switch would be my first bet

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll test the batteries then move on to these.

The above answer is assuming the batteries are actually good, which is the first potential cause. They may appear charged but have such high internal resistance that you can’t get enough current out of them. Try testing them with a resistance load and a multimeter.

Thanks, I'll test that. I think it unlikely that this would happen with two batteries simultaneously, but I'll rule it out first.

Hi there. I also have Ryobi LSD-120 drill with two batteries. If the batteries fail to charge, it will probably mean the voltage of the batteries has dropped too low ! You could try to "jump start" them with a 12V battery charger, for a few seconds, but that would only be a temporary fix.

You can buy new batteries from Ali express in China for only $16 US. each at the moment Ken T.
