Mac screen has white vignette, fades to normal after lot of use. Why?

I have a mid 2014 15” MacBook Pro with retina display.

I do not have any issue with spilling of anything on the system and all of a sudden in Dec 2020 the screen suddenly faded to white.

It seemed like a full layer over the screen. I have then updated to the latest software, tried all boot-ups options, and taken to the nearest service center. They said since it’s an old model it might be wearing out and they don’t offer any practical solution.

Sometime later, I used the computer for a whole day, and eventually by midnight the screen became normal, with no sight of any fades or flickers or vignettes. But, again after shutting down or putting it to sleep this cycle of fade restarts and gradually decreases with the time of usage (it needs a minimum of 8hrs to become completely normal).

During the white fade phase, when I take a screenshot of the screen, it doesn’t show the fade or any sign of it.

Lately from reading from the forum, I have tried the mac fan control app, which helps with the heating of the computer but not the vignette fading fully.

I have also tried the right and left top corner push-pull, it didn’t help. Also, my speakers gave up in between and are unusable. I live in South India and it’s really humid.

I try to use the AC whenever I have edit work and the mac heats up.

Kindly offer any help. Thank you!

Does the problem show up when using an external Thunderbolt or mini Display Port connected external monitor?

tarafından

No, when I connect to a mirror monitor or screen it is normal. No sign of any issue.

@aloha93 - So both screens are working then properly?

tarafından

Even when there is a white fade/vignette on my mac and I connect it through HDMI to a monitor..the monitor display doesn't show the fade/vingette. It's a clean display.

Hi, Mel. I have the same problem here with my 13" Macbook Pro 2015. Did you find any solution? I would like to know that from you if you did:D

it sounds like your internal display has failed. within it is a small logic board we can a T-CON, it controls the creation of the image onto the LCD panel and is part of it. If the external display shows a clean image then you know your internal needs replacing.

Copy, So do I need to ask the apple service center to clean or check through the internal system? Since mine is mid-2014, they said it's termed as 'vintage mac' and the parts are hard to source or find. Whenever I wake the computer from sleep the edges of the screen have a white foggy look and as I use it, it fades out.

@aloha93 - You need a new display assembly which you can replace your self MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014 Display Assembly Replacement

Where do you live country?

Thank you, Dan. I live in India.

@aloha93 - Still a bit confused ... When you plug in the HDMI external display the internal display starts to work properly? If that is correct, then the logic board MUX logic has an issue. I think you need to find someone who has deeper skills to diagnose your problem locally.

Sorry you did say South India in your question. Sadly I don't know anyone to aim you to.

No worries Dan! Thank you so much for your insights. Yeah as I spoke to the local service centres few weeks back, they were not willing to help and diagnosed that my mac is getting old. I'll try again later, currently, we are in lockdown.

Regarding the monitor, what I was trying to say is, if my mac monitor screen is showing white vignette and faded colour saturation..and during this, I connect my mac to any external monitor system..the screen and background look normal on that (external) monitor, while my main screen (mac) still shows a faded display. I usually connect while editing or to view any video.

I have the same issue maybe, a vignette around the edges, slowly fades away but not completely, I read before somewhere it could be the brightness is or was up to high and has overheated some graphics processors or the thing that controls that on the logic board. I have swapped over screens, and it was actually worse when I did that so that says to me it is not the LCD, others may disagree.....

@danj It is only visible as a standalone, external display is fine.

@livfe - what does an external display show you? If it’s clean then that indeed points to a bad internal display unit. As you tried a second I would have to believe it was bad too. If on the other hand the external also showed the same bad image then the GPU logic within the logic board as a problem.

tarafından

@livfe - Bad display then.

@danj I will make a new topic with it in the next days as it isn't exactly the same issue discussed here, similar....mine it is like a picture frame around the edges
