Maytag fridge WAS freezing food

My 6 year old fridge started freezing everything. Technician came out and computer told him it was in the freezer condenser area. Opened up the vent area in freezer and it was frozen . He recommended new fridge as it would be expensive to fix . Ever since he checked it two weeks ago it’s been working !. What would have caused this ? I had ordered a new fridge but cancelled it since mine is working fine after a month of freezing food .

Hi,

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

Perhaps the "frozen vent" (presumably the damper unit) was stuck in the open position by the ice build up. This could be caused by a number of things, faulty defrost heater, defrost thermostat, blocked drain etc.

Anyone of these could prevent a normal auto defrost action from happening allowing the ice to build up over time instead of being melted and drained away to evaporate every 10-12 hours as it should be.

Did the repairer say what the problem was besides being expensive to fix?

Did he do anything at the time to remove the ice build up e.g. run a manual defrost cycle?

Did he run a diagnostic check of the components in the refrigerator? Most refrigerators have a diagnostic test program or procedure that allows for the main components to be tested and checked to make sure that they’re working OK.

It is very strange if he did not test the fridge to make sure that everything was working OK before he left.

Yes he ran a diagnostic test which is how he found the problem was in the freezer . He took the cover off the condensing unit (?) and showed me the ice build up but did not remove the ice - ( I will get the model number when I go for lunch ).

The fridge has worked ever since ! It’s two weeks so far and I just don’t know if I still should go get a new one as recommended in case this only lasts a short period

@cansncattle

The evaporator unit which is behind a panel inside the freezer compartment is where ice usually forms and it has to be auto defrosted every 10-12 hours to keep it in check otherwise it continues to build up. This is normal operation for an auto defrost refrigerator.

If the defrost cycle doesn't work for whatever reason in melting the ice build up, then there is a problem.It can take several days or weeks before anything untowards is noticed though e.g. fridge too warm but freezer OK, ice build up on back inside walls or floor of compartments, fridge too cold but freezer OK etc

The condenser unit is outside the compartments near the compressor motor.

knowing the model number, will hopefully help to find the tech sheet online. This details the diagnostic procedures and what the error codes (if any) produced from the tests mean and help to narrow down what the problem may be.

For the repairman to just simply verify that the unwanted ice build up is there and leave it at that and then say "get a new one" is not good. Not elaborating on what might be wrong or even doing more testing given the diagnostic test results to find out the cause of the ice build up is not very professional I think. Maybe he was just in a hurry to be elsewhere or he didn't know what to do next. ;-)
