After replacing the battery in my iPhone XS Max, an error message "Unknown Part" appeared in the settings.

The Settings>Battery>Battery Health cannot display battery percentage.

This is normal behavior and is another way for Apple to discourage people from repairing their own devices. A warning is displayed in the introduction of the iFixit guide for battery replacement on this phone. If your phone is acting normally, you can safely ignore this warning.

Keep in mind that Apple continues to make moves like this that hurt the repairability of their products. Replacing the screen, battery, home button (if applicable), and/or front sensor assembly (on iPhones with Face ID) will trigger a message or cause some functions not to work on many iPhones and other Apple devices. Some tools, like the JC V1S, will restore the battery health functions but may not remove the "battery may not be genuine" message.

Serialization of parts is one of the things trying to be fixed by "Right to Repair" laws. You can learn more about Right to Repair under the Advocacy section on the footer of the iFixit website.

Not only do you loose battery health - but now I can't download and install new OS updates. I'm stuck on 15.5 since Aug 2022 iPhone 11. Really upset with this.........

tarafından

@Junior Hernandez That is a separate issue. I have never experienced lack of OS updates due to a battery issue. Have you tried updating via iTunes/Finder?

tarafından

@Junior Hernandez i had the same problem until today. I gave my phone the OS Update with my computer.

There's a small board attached to the anode/cathode of the battery.

For a DIY repair, you'll need to transfer this board from the original to the new using a spot welder.

Then a programmer to reset the charge cycle of the battery.

Totally unrealistic/not cost effective for a one off at home, you would need a really good, reputable repair shop to carry this out.

After the battery was replaced by a local Fix Shop i noticed the battery unknown message and later found out that the original battery BMS board needed to be install on the new battery. Really upset about this....... Apple thumbs down

Welding on a lithium battery has the risk of it blowing up in your face. I don’t think a repair shop will offer this any time soon

hello guys how if i buy apple Genuine Battery do i still need to transfer the BMS ?

Just replaced my wife's iPhone Xs Max battery with a 3rd party battery off Amazon that actually has higher capacity than original battery so it should last longer. Anyway, after the replacement iOS gave me error messages and displays a red circled "1" next to my Settings icon on my home screen. I re-set the phone and setup from scratch as a potential solution and it made no difference. The battery is working great so I am asking my wife to ignore the messages. What else can I do? Thanks Apple, you guys really suck.

It is possible to get rid of those messages and get the health information back, but you can't do it cheaply, and you have to still have the original battery.

Basically you have to remove the BMS, or Battery Management System, circuit off the old battery cell and transplant it onto a new battery cell. Figure $40 for a spot welder to do the job right, or a soldering iron if you're brave and want to take a chance on damaging the new cell.

After that your health information is still the same as it was on the old battery, so you need a device programmer to clear those settings back to 100% and the cycle count to zero. Add at least another $85 for that.

The battery cells are actually slightly cheaper than complete batteries, but you could use the one on your replacement battery if you cut off the existing BMS, assuming the positive and negative leads are long enough to work.

The only other choice is to pay Apple to replace the battery. The XS isn't supported on the self repair program, so you're out of luck there.

The battery BMS Board was encrypted. So, after the replacement of the battery shows "Unknown part". This battery carries the Battery health data too. If such happen then the analytic report also missing. So, if you replace the battery then you have to replace the BMS board too. This also happened to my 12 pro max and I fixed this. The method to fix unknown parts after battery replacement may need experience do it carefully.

There's a second half to this that the video you linked to doesn't address, and that's the fact that when you move the BMS to the new cell, you're keeping the existing health information. In the example the health read 97%, which is okay to start with for a new battery, but what if the percentage is down to something like 79%? That's the point at which you say you need a new battery, but now your brand new cell looks like a bad battery.

The solution is a device programmer such as the JC V1SE or the QianLi iCopy. Either one is capable of reprogramming the battery health percentage and cycle counts back to zero, giving you a truly new battery.

HOWEVER, this only works on iPhone XS and XR batteries. Apple effed us over again on the iPhone 11 by changing the way the health information is stored and disabled the ability of the above-mentioned device programmers to reset that data.

The aftermarket industry has come to the rescue here with something called a tag-on flex. It's a small circuit that plugs in between the battery and the logic board and reenables the ability to do the programming. The tag-on flex is then permanently installed in the phone with the battery and makes everything work correctly.
