Turns on and works fine for 3 minutes, but shuts off unexpectedly

Last week I was using normally, but then it started shutting off after a while. I tried everything, and even when I try to run diagnostics it will shut off, this happens with the battery conected or not, and even with the board out, it will shut off

It might be an issue with cooling. Does it sound like the cooling fan is going?

tarafından

@danj Would love to try it, but it won't even finish booting now

@jmehnert It is, I changed the thermal paste and tried running with a fan pointed to the computer, but it didn't help. I seems that the CPU and other chips get so hot that it shuts off

Ah! You'll need to inspect the thermal paste quantity! I often see non-running systems often is caused by overloading the TIM getting it under the insulator getting the small SMD components wet with the TIM which messes up the timing logic. After removing the logic board lift off the heat sink.

This is too much!

Give this a try get a single sheet of face tissue cut it into the same size as the CPU and then wet it making a tight ball. Even this is to much! But it gives you an idea how little you really need.

Now the hard part! Getting the TIM off! After carefully pulling away as much as you can physically, Then use a small soft toothbrush (kids) to help. After I've pulled the old paste away I use a loadable spray can which I load up with solvent (Give 95% Isopropyl a try first, you may need something stronger). This is what I use True Power Rechargeable Sprayer It allows me to get into the nicks and crannies between the SMD devices and under them a bit.

Hello! I did that and managed to keep the mac on, but only without the battery connected, the CPU temp won't go higher than 60°C or 140°F, but it might be because it is clocked down. I'll keep testing to see if the problem was the excess of thermal paste or the battery that is dying, or both. Thank you!

Sounds like your battery is on its last legs.

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

I managed to keep the computer on, but only without the battery. I've installed the application and I'll give it a try. Thank you for your advice!

So, managed to keep the mac on with the battery, it seems that it is indeed dead, I'll search for a local shop here to see if they have one so I can test.

With this battery, the CPU will run at 70°C or 158°F, don't really know why
