2016 MacBook Pro retina touchbar dead
I have a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina with touch bar. One day I noticed the battery was not at 100%, even though the computer was plugged in. The battery slowly discharged down to zero and now it won't turn on, it only makes the dead battery symbol on the screen. I have tried another charger and it makes no difference. I also removed the bottom case and disconnected the keyboad and trackpad cable and it made no difference. I also tried all the keyboard reset key patterns. It seems like parts of the board get hot when the power cable is plugged in, but still won't power on. The fans would turn on for a few moments when I try to turn it on but that's all.

Did you try using a different charging cable? Perhaps the one you have doesn't work anymore

It was completely and totally dead as a door nail. Now it turns on but shows a folder with a question mark, which apparently means it cannot find an operating system. I plugged in a bootable ubuntu usb stick and it will boot up on that. I cannot find any sign of the original main drive when playing around in Linux. There is a slight burning smell, perhaps the ssd is fried.

@Erik Mueller - Well, first of all your Ubuntu boot dive won't let you see the Apple propriety APFS volume so that makes sense!
What you need to do is restart your system and press the Option (⌥) key to see if you can see the boot drive
Reference: Mac startup key combinations
Use the arrow keys to select the volume did it startup?
