Replacing video cable for MacBook Pro 2019 (13 inch)

Since last week my Macbook Pro 13 inch (2019, two thunderbolt ports, now almost 3 years old) display is having a lot of trouble, displaying a lot of flickering horizontal colored lines, and increasingly often only showing vertical stripes (white, green, purple etc). During a visit to the Apple store I was told that I should not have used the laptop with the screen extended as far as mechanically possible, as it would damage the display cable (never had this issue with previous Macbooks). According to them, the only fix would be to replace the entire display unit (a 650 euro repair)...

Since, I have been reading about 'flexgate' which would affect previous models, and the quick and dirty fix that some repair shops offer is to cut off the affected cable and solder a new one into place, this should not cost more than 100 or 150 euro as the replacement part is cheap.

However, one shop told me that for this model, a different cable needs replacing, and the budget flexgate repair wouldn't work here, so they would only offer to replace the entire LCD.

Does anyone have a similar issue and a possible solution, other than replacing what is otherwise a perfectly fine LCD?

Update (11/01/2022)

Hi @hellomacos and @danj, thanks a lot for your responses.

I do agree that it looks like this is not a typical flexgate issue; I wasn't told though that the T-CON board is to blame, however both Apple store and a indie repair shop told me that the laptop would require an entire new screen part.

The vertical stripes are not random like the horizontal ones, they look more like mono-colour blocks and sometimes the entire screen is taken over by those blocks - white with different colours. As I have had to get a new laptop for my work, I have reinstalled the old one, haven't seen those blocks yet but the horizontal stripes are always there.

See this photo for an example.

Your issue is not your fault! The displays hinge limits what is too far as long as don’t force things.

Your issue is not the backlight cable which the older 2016 & 2017 models had so please don’t dive into that!

Your issue is within the T-CON board which hangs off of the display assembly and is part of it. You need a new display assembly to fix this! There was a run of bad displays and Apple did have an extended warranty program for it. I would go to a real Apple Store to see if it’s covered otherwise it’s quite expensive to repair.

@kenswift

As @danj has said,it could be a t-con issue rather than cable issue

As @danj has said the Apple Store is probably the best place for this one but if they cant do anything maybe open it your self and see if there is any damage to the cable

Thanks:-)

@kenswift

That looks more like a tcon/signal issue

If it were flexgate the screen would randomly go extremely dark:-)

Your image tells us you have a T-CON failure.

Sadly, it makes little difference as the T-CON is part of the display assembly and can’t be replaced on its own MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Mid 2018-Mid 2019) Display Assembly do keep in mind you want a used one as a new one requires Apples calibration tool which is not available other than within Apple directly or Apple Authorized repair shops. Hi

This issue can be fixed by soldering a new cable in place

However

There are 2 ways of doing this that are both extremely difficult

1)find the break in the cable that is already there(this one doesn’t last as long) and solder on a bit of new cable to what’s left

Here’s a video on it

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ylGKFeNipS...

2)take the display apart (this isn’t recommended because there is a fairly high chance you will break the LCD but is a more long term fix)

Here’s a video on it

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bYtDVjYNxi

As you can see neither option is what many would call easy but these are your only 2 options

As for the cable you can buy replacement ones on AliExpress for your model as all the newer retina MacBook use the same cable

Here’s a link to the part

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

@hellomacos - First we do need to be mindful of the given persons skill set. This a very advanced repair and some special tools are required to do the job correctly.

Second, I would first rule out the other possibility’s before making this leap as being the issue.

In this case the issue is not the backlight cable or the camera cable. The issue is strickly within the T-CON boards circuit messing up. Remember the eDP signal from the logic board needs to be converted into what the LCD needs to create the image.

If you remember your old CRT display design you have a electron beam which excites the screens phosphor layer to glow. This is the scan, then the given point is controlled by the switching logic within the tube to turn off or lower the intensity of the beam. Here we have two control lines which enable the transistor logic within the screen to enable which color element to allow the polarized light to pass. So what we are seeing is vertical stripe’s where the timing got messed up and the horizontal lines is a possible crack in the back panel. So in either case this system needs a new display assembly.
