Odd problem- IO board or Logic Board?

Have an odd problem:

The other day I was on youtube and I got the pinwheel of death, my computer froze, and I turned it off. WhenI turned it back on I got the white screen, so I turned it off and on a few more times and it was still a white screen, sometimes showing the folder with the question mark, and circle with the line through it.

I let it sit until the next day and it booted up fine. For the next few days this would happen. I managed to repair the discs, took the IO cable off, cleaned it and everything seemed fine.

I boot it up yesterday and I have been getting the white screen, and the missing folder icon. I plugged a USB in, and it crashed my computer. Trying to creating a backup also crashes it.

The charging port works, as well as the backlight and the screen. As it sits now, sometimes the apple with the loading bar will come up, and then it will get to the end off the loading bar and nothing happens, it will just sit with a full bar.

I tried to do a clean install and the SSD wasn't recognized to install a new version of the OS.

What should I try and replace?

Try running apple diagnostics at boot by pressing "D" & following the prompts, post a screenshot of the error messages if any so we can go from there.

Try to reset the SMC & PRAM https://www.avast.com/c-reset-mac-pram-s... AFAIK White Screen can indicate a failing or failed GPU....

Question Mark folder indicates the SSD or any OS is being recognized.

Maybe @danj can provide some info when he is around.

Have you tried booting up under Safe Mode or run the onboard diagnostics? Diagnostics may not run as Apple messed up the systems firmware with one of their updates. But you should be able to get a different response under Safe Mode

@danj Could also search for a download of AHT (Apple Hardware Test) if diagnostics didn't work out.

@livfe - True one could do this, but most people don’t have access to a second Mac to create the USB thumb drive as well as prep the drive as needed. GitHub is a great source of many tools, sadly most lack the details to set them up or require a bit of fudging.

While getting TG Pro will require payment of $10 USD it is all setup with its diagnostics and offers better insight into the systems cooling issues. It all comes down to the given persons skills set and what we mostly see here. FYI - I don’t make any money on anything I recommend for parts, tools or applications.

To me it sounds like the internal SSD might've started to fail. If the SSD is connected properly but it doesn't show up at all in Disk Utility, it's most likely due to the SSD failing. If the data is important I would recommend contacting a data recovery facility for options. To repair the device you'll most likely need to replace the SSD. Here's an option that I found online. Good luck!
