Laptop not turning on, lights on

This is a 8 years old laptop, but it has this recurring problem of not turning on with lights on. In the past, I can turn it on with next attempt after a few minutes or hours. Nowadays, I am not able to turn it on even after a few days. The lights for power button, f2 and caps lock are on. However, black screen. I have tried:

  1. Hard reset.
  2. Opening up the back, and disconnect and reconnect the battery.
  3. Combination keys of esc+f2+caps lock+ power key, which suppose to prompt BIOS shared from somebody in YouTube of same model. After doing it, the lights of motherboard will not turn off when plugged in.

I was able to update Windows a few days ago when I was able to turn it on. Thought the problem was due to me not updating, thought I fixed it. I did a PC health report, and remembered that it has a battery health of 55%. I have academic files in it, and I hope to able to fix it. Please guide me.

Hi @ozueun,

Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if it is turning on but just with no laptop display. Press Fn + F8 (both together) to toggle the display between the laptop only, external monitor only or both on together.

If there is a display on the external monitor there's a backlight problem with the laptop's display.

If you can't connect to a monitor then try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the laptop screen and check for any images.

They will be very faint if they are there so trying in a darkened room may help to see them.

Hi @jayeff,

I forgot to mention that I did tried with the external monitor too and the same issue persisted. To be exact, I tried most of the steps from Asus official (https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1014276...) for black screen issue, except the BIOS recovery mode which requires another PC. I have seen people having the same issue, but nobody seems to know why. Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it.

@ozueun

You may have to access a PC so that you can try the BIOS recovery method as outlined in the link you posted.

Most libraries have a PC that allows public access ;-)

Hi @jayeff,

I guess that's the only way left to figure out if the suggested step will work or not. Thanks for the help anyway.

Well I will suggest you ensure the plug to the power cord is plugged into an outlet and to the computer. Check the laptop's battery and check the charger that it hasn't come loose. If it's still not turning on, it could be a problem with an internal component. So make your system check from system technician.

Hi @gtip,

Yes, the power cord is plugged in tightly, and the laptop can shows the power level indication alright for low battery or not. My area doesn't has the best system technician for this laptop model. They would require me to send my laptop to the another area for at least 2 weeks of inspection and repair which charge more than it's worth.
