Kenmore 70 washer intermittently stops spinning

Good morning, our Kenmore 70 series washer works perfectly fine (adds water, agitates, drains and spins) for about two washes/cycles. However, if we have to do another load, it will add water, agitate, and drain, but will not spin on its own unless we open and then close the lid. It will then drain and spin just as it should. Any ideas before I start throwing money at it? The only new parts it has is a motor/gear box coupler.

Edit: just wanted to add that it will do this during the middle of a cycle. For instance, it will add water, agitate, and then drain and spin just fine. Then during the rinse, it will add water, agitate, drain but not spin. All of this without touching the lid. To me this seems to eliminate the lid switch, since it will do this without touching the lid during the middle of a cycle.

Hi,

What is the model number of the washer?

Does the timer still advance during the spin cycle even though the machine is not spinning?

Try gently tapping the timer and check if this causes it to start spinning when it should.

Yes the timer still advances to the end, even when it is not spinning. It's still draining, just not spinning. I will try tapping it when it does it next time.

After bypassing the kid switch, it spun as it should three times and then the non-spin returned.

If by gently tapping the timer it starts to spin, perhaps it may be a dirty contact inside the timer.

Do not try opening it up to fix it as you will have contacts and cams everywhere.

There are about 12 cams and 24 contacts inside the timer arranged like a clockwork mechanism.

With the power disconnected from the machine try liberally spraying some electronic contact cleaner (example only - do not use regular WD40) through any openings in the timer, allow it to fully dry (read the label on the can), reconnect the power to the machine and check if it works OK and is not intermittent.

If still no good then if you determine that it is the timer, search online for WP66149 (examples only) to find suppliers that suit you best.

Thank you for the information. I have temporarily bypassed the kid switch to rule that out. I will try this next.
