Unlike a clothes washer, a dishwasher uses the detergent in the middle of the cycle. The pre wash will wash away the detergent before the main wash can begin. During the main wash, water is heated up to a specific temperature allowing the soap dispenser to open. This is the best time for detergent to enter the water. Two rinses will follow and the cycle is complete.
