So tape is inserted, loads tape around "spindle" (or whatever it is called) then immediately returns tape to cartridge and unit shuts down. Have tried multiple tapes.

I am thinking there is an issue with the drive motors or the cartridge itself. But I suppose you have already tried multiple cartridges, right?
If the motors do not turn to tighten the tape, I think that is causing it to back out.
