LCD has lines through it, but is not cracked.
Not sure why this would happen.
Any advice on what it could be?
I thought it was either the connecting cable or the inverter.

The LVDS cable is the video cable that carry the video signal from the logic board to the LCD panel via 2 connectors. Dark shadows can be caused by a defective backlight lamp if the shadows are starting at the screen base or by pressure points on the screen (applying excessive pressure in the screen with the fingers, etc). In the two cases the LCD panel must be replaced.
Concerning the varsityanchor lines issue, that's bad news if you get no video on the external monitor. Most of the time that leads to a defective logic board since the early MacBook Pros had problems with the Nvidia 8600 and the Ati 1600 GPUs. But you should get an image on the external if you have one (even with lines) on the internal. Are you sure the external monitor is well connected ?

Lines can be a result of either a defective LCD panel, LVDS cable, or Logic board.
you can test the MacBook Pro with an external display to rule out Logic board.. next step would be to make sure the LVDS cable is not loose, or damaged.. if all looks good.. perhaps test with a new LVDS cable. LCD is usually the last thing to go wrong. but some people are foolish enough to grab the notebook by the display.. pressure on the panel and damage the circuitry.

The MacBook Pro does work with an external display. Could it be the inverter or the display cable?
The "display cable" is called an LVDS Cable.. it is absolutely not the inverter or inverter cable -
Lines can be a result of either a defective LCD panel, LVDS cable, or Logic board.
What is the LVDS cable?
i have some defect, apple says that need to replace display, i dont believe! I have some dark shadows coming from the bottom of the screen upper. Everything works well, except this inconvenience.
I will test with an external display to rule out the logic board, but what is the LVDS cables?
thankx

Thankx for the explanation, yours was the most clear one, the Apple guys never told a clue just saying that i must replace the Display without any detail about why.
So i can survive with the computer as it is, meanwhile i will plan what i will do in the future, buy a new LCD and replace myself, or buy a used MacBook Pro as mine and replace the complete display, or buy a new computer and sell mine for spare parts ...
thankx once more for the help
